Which new barrel?
« on: February 23, 2005, 01:59:17 PM »
I am going to send my wife's new youth handi (.243) back to the factory for service.  The action opens when I fire it, sometimes.  I'll also ask them about a trigger job, Its currently 5.25 lbs ( think they'll lighten it?)

I want to get another barrel while they have it, but I don't know which one yet.  We currently have and reload for rifles in .222, .223, .243, .308, .270, and 8x57.

.223   I could get another .223.  I already have all the reloading stuff.  Its quieter and has less recoil than the .243, so I could get my wife shooting "her rifle" more.

.204    I want one.  But I want one that is very accurate, and so far thats not my experience with handis.

30-30    Guys here seem to like the way these shoot in handis.  A good rimmed cartridge to play with loading black powder.  Low recoil and heavier bullets for the wife to hunt deer with.

.44 Magnum  also low recoil and heavier bullets for the wife to hunt with.  I'll soon have a progressive press and dies from a friend who doesn't have the space I have.  If I get a handgun, I could use the same ammo.

.50 cal muzzleloader    We could use it in the early season.  But I want one to put a scope on.  If I'm restricted to open sights, I'll stick with my Hawken.  Wife says she doesn't want a muzzle loader, but I think she will like hunting deer in October vs December.

A few I've rejected

45-70, 450 marlin    Too much recoil for my wife, or me with such a short stocked rifle.

7-08, 280  Not much different than our .270 or .243

Well, what do you all think?  Anything else I should consider, not duplicating something I have?

Does any certain caliber tend to be more accurate in handi's?

Let's see...

204 -  Ya gotta get one!  Last group out of mine on breaking in day, 5/8".  Five shots @ 100yds.  Its wearing a 4-12 Cabela's Pine ridge bargain scope.

30/30 - Classic deer medicine.  Just right for the low-recoil set.

50 cal.  -  Longer season, scopes and all.

Buy them all!  I just sent my 204 frame back to have 50 cal, 20ga Ultra slug and a couple of smooth bores mounted.  I toyed with 30/30, but my antique Marlins fill that need.

Hey, did you think of the Hornet?  I have one on the youth synthetic set up I got for my nephew to shoot.  Who can live without a 22 Hornet?

22 hornet, hmmm...

Don't need it, but that hasn't stopped me yet.  I've heard they are a pain to load for.  What do you use a 22 hornet for?

I hunted 'chucks, short range, out to 125 yards or so with one when I was a kid.  It belonged to an older friend I always hunted with, and I'd borrow it when I was tired of taking a 270 wacking just for a groundhog.

I got the handi barrel for my nephew in the fall thinking it was good for paper, plinking and chucks come spring.  He'll just be 12 next month and isn't much bigger than my 6 year old.  He's pretty good with a 22 LR, and I want to move him up slowly.

Well...if you really don't want to down load the 45-70 and have a great fun cartridge for it...the 30-30 would be my next obviuos choice...followed by the 30-06...both of these you can download...or upload...and shoot cast bullets in them as well...as to having the same ammo for rifle and pistol...yea...you can do that...but if your shooting a 44 mag pistol...and plan on shooting some of the longer 300 grainers in it...you might want to check and see if they fit...and also....there is never a gaurentee that the load you want to shoot will will be accurate in both of them...one other good thing about the 44 Mag barrel...as others have done...you can ream it out to 445 Super Mag...and still shoot the lighter loads in it...

Get the hornet.  It is no more difficult to load for a hornet than a staightwalled case cartridge.  Lots of fun use my khornet for yotes and crows.  Nothing better than making crow burger out of the hornet
I must be crazy.

44 mag. 270gr golddot from speer will take deer at 100yd.allday long. 180gr lays chucks flat . Ammo & components are everywhere. I agree with 22khornet on the ease of reloading 22 hornets. Besides the hornet is just fun to shoot.

Thanks for the good advice everyone.  I still don't know.  Leaning towards the 44 mag.  how much faster is the 445 Super?  How does the 44 mag recoil compare to the 243?  In light clothes, it bothered my wife, but that could also be from the noise.  How loud is the 44 from a rifle?

Quite a few guys have done the 445 super in their 44mags...getting a big boost in velocity to from what I here...do a search for 445 and check out the various threads I believe Ditchdigger did his and really likes it...and with this ...you can still shoot the regular 44 ammo in it...seems like about the best thing...

The 44 is noisy no matter what you shoot it from , mine is a marlin lever gun. It still has a bit of recoil to it . I just had a neck fusion and can still shoot it, just not very many times. With proper ear protection it is a good gun for the new shooter and women. Its my gun of choice for the swamp hunting I do, and for the pest I don't want to crawl away. :biggun:
