Encore Problems Fixed - Think AGAIN !!!!????
« on: February 08, 2003, 05:12:08 PM »
Hello,
I posted several times on the old forum about my encore 209x50 problems. My shots were in a group 12-14 inches low at 25 yards. I tried changing the scope, rings, and bases without luck. I was advised by T/C to send the barrel back to them for inspection. I did this and now have the results. My barrel was BENT. The factory serviced the barrel by re-lasering it. This means that they bent it back into shape. The way it was explained to me is that during the manufacturing process, some of the steel has some "spring" in it, and sometimes the barrels "spring" out of shape a little bit causing problems. After fixing it, it was test fired to be sure it was ok. It was then sent back to me. When I got the barrel back, it didn't appear any worse for the wear until I dismantled it for cleaning. The barrel was shipped back to me filthy, as it had not been cleaned after shooting. In addition, the breech plug now also has rust on it. So, after 4 months of fooling around with this $500.00 + rifle, T/C's fine service gives me a dirty, rusty rifle. I have yet to shoot it, but I'm not impressed so far. Will let you know on that later. I paid for the rifle, I paid for all the powder and bullets wasted on a bent barrel, hell...I paid for a bent barrel, I paid for two sets of rings and bases, I even paid to send a defective product back to them, I yelled at a leupold service guy for having bad rings or bases (I've since asked a thousend pardons, he laughed it off), I paid for their mistake with my time.....All of the people out there with these rifles had better consider this because I see postings similar to mine about the shots being way low or off the charts. Your barrel probably was laying next to mine at the factory. All those rifles will have to fixed or shimmed to shoot ok. Maybe T/C ought to slack off that monster ad campaign and put some of their money into a good quality control system. I don't appreciate being a quality control inspector and having to pay them to do it!!!! Maybe I'll copy this thread and send it to them....but then I'd probably just get another form email telling me to send this forum in to them and they'll take a look at it to determine the problem, too. They should have at least used the bore butter first before this kind of service

Hey I know what you are talking about. I didn't know about the bent barrel problem let me tell you my experience. I bought a Encore rifle chambered in 300 win mag. I am a reloaded and have been reloading for about 4 years and I will be the first to tell anyone that I don't it about making ammo and I learn something new each time I reload something and alot of people don't like reloads but anyway thats another subject. Back to the 300 I loaded numerous loads for this rife/cal. different bullets, powders, primers different seating depths everything that I knew that I could do I did it to no advail  I couldn't get any type bullet to shoot, I called t/c told them the problem send the barrel back we'll check it out. Well, before I sent it back the first time I let a good friend of mine who's a gunsmith look at and check it out well he checked the head space and it was way to much so I sent a letter with it to t/c and told them about the headspace so they checked it and said it wasn't enough and gave it more headspace so I went through the whole scenerio of shooting it again and still no decent groups so I sent it back again and this time they wanted the whole gun to check the reciever well when they sent it back again they said that the barrel had to be recrowned and said it was shooting 1 inch groups at a 100 yds. they even sent a top of a factory ammo box with it that they shot Winchester 150 gr. Powerpoints. Well here I go agian, I tried my rounds and they didn't work and I got some of the ones they shot well they didn't work either I sure didn't get no 1 in. groups. And this is why I think I had the same problem that you've had. I would shoot the first shot with a clean cold barrel and it would be high and every shot after that first one would be at least 8 to 9 inches lower then the first. OH, by now I am hot,  :blaster: well they got another call, and I sent it back again, they sent me a new barrel this time  and my postage and handling back to. But seeing what you went through and finding out that you had a bent barrel I think that this was what was wrong with the one I had. Thanks for sharing it, I am with you they need to re-evaluate their gunsmiths and barrel makers I think. Good luck, Robert :excuseme:
