Custom Mountain Rifle

Hello  Kenscot,        About a year and a half ago I ordered the Kevlar mountain rifle, left handed in stainless.    .270 was the caliber after emails with Mr. Graybeard himself.   I am very happy with the gun. The action is smoother than a standard Rem 700.  Initially I looked at the gun, and sometimes thought it was a lot of extra money to have a lefty stainless without having to go to the boomer mags that they offer in standard production.   I kept wondering what I was getting for the extra money.   What I have found so far is that the stock is a McMillian,  I sent the battleship gray back to them, and they painted it in a standard black which I like much better.  Looking at their catalog, that stock covered a good portion of the extra price.  The barrel is of unknown manufacture to me.  It does not have the standard Remington stamping on it, only the caliber.   After about 20-30 rounds, the ejection pin became stuck in, and would not eject the shells.  My local gunsmith cleaned the burr, and also polished the lugs a little smoother.    It  was also on his recommendation that I purchase this gun.   The one complaint that I did have was taken care of by Remington customer service to my complete satisfaction.   The gun comes with the ISS.   They do not change the keyhole to the right side.  When I would operate the safety, it would just barely chaff the ISS keyhole.   I contacted the custom shop, and they advised they could not remove the ISS, but to call the part department.   I called cust service for parts, explained my problem.  They verified my serial, number, probably confirming that it came from the custom shop, and sent me a new bolt firing pin assembly without the ISS no charge, and did not want the original back.  My local smith installed the new assembly, and the gun is perfect to me.    More than anything is how if feels in my hand.  I am very happy, and would consider another if I needed a different caliber.    Good luck on your decision.

Hi Ken,

I also have one....had it for years.  It's an 06 and is just fine.  I had Brown Precision clean up the trigger back 8 years ago.  I've taken black bear, hogs, axis, ibex, sika and corsicans with it.  No problems.  I may have the recoil pad changed, it's kinda hard  for my liking.  I was going to order one in .375HH but bought a BDLSS instead.  The only complaint I have is I have a slow barrel.  My chronograph tells me that I get lower FPS with all handloads in that gun.  Strange but academic.  The animals never knew the difference.

Doug, how do you like the BDL SS? I have a chance to pick one up and am deciding between that and the Sendero SF, both in 7mm mag or 300 win mag. Theres about a $200.00 difference. The only problem is I already have a heavy rifle with my VLS .308, I dont know if I can handle another heavy one, but whats a lb I guess. I would imagine the Sendero would make me grin more, but the BDL SS might do almost as good for less $$.

*sigh*

decisions decisions.

ack, forgot about the LSS(not the mountian rifle version). Thats a probability too.

Hey Sniper....

Sorry to take so long to get back to you.  I like the BDLSS.  It's about 8lbs in 375HH and that's fine. I figured that if I go on a trip that requires this gun, it's probably going to be in rather rutic/extreme conditions, so, SS is a plus.  I've kept the REM upperware stock because I'm not too sure why I shouldn't.  I've had it magnaported, recrowned, a timney trigger, a new Brownells SS bolt shroud/firing pin (to get rid of that silly safety).  It shoots really well and isn't all too heavy to carry all day.  Haven't shot any game with it yet, but may soon.

The iron sights went real fast...the front sight was cross threaded and loose, but, I use a scope anyway.

Regards,

Doug
