Author Topic: Southeast Oklahoma or Kansas Hog hunt (Read 1814 times)

I work 6 days a week. I live in Joplin, Missouri, that is in the sw corner of the state. I am looking for something fairly close, say 200 miles. I am wanting go hog hunting. Can you guys give me some ideas on outfitters to call. I have never done this I want it to be a good experience. I guess I need to included that I want to rifle hunt. Web sites or phone numbers would be appreciated. Thanks

I'm in the same boat. I work with a guy that used to "just go down by the river and shoot one" but the land sold, etc. I've been thinking about an outfitter, but for the cost of that I could buy a new gun and just think about it. Hmm. :?

Are you looking for a free range hunt or a preserve? If the latter there are at least 2-3 of them in Missouri. I don't know of anything in OK but know there are hogs in SE OK at least.

Not really much for hogs in Kansas. They are around, but not too many, and getting permission to hunt them is difficult at best. They had some up at Fort Riley, but getting into the areas that actually have them is hit and miss with the military schedule, and they don't release open areas until last minute. I think you'd be better off in OK. There are a few outfitters in the eastern part of the state. We used to one that would let you on for $50/day and $50/hog, but they had problems with some jerks that tore the place up, so they closed down entirely to hunting. Too bad.

There is a place in western Oklahoma called Chain ranch that cost $50 and then if you get a hog they charge 100. so it would be 150. if you kill one there . web page is www.chainranch.com and the number is on there to call 580-886-2910 I hope this helps I have never been there but thinking about it in the furture. Don't waste your time on the Chain Ranch. We tried it out last year and it wasn't worth the money or effort. It ended up being a quarter section m/l inside of high fence and they put us in 3 stands on it. We spent the first evening without seeing anything larger than about 30 pounds and some exotic goats and sheep (they never mentioned those when we talked to them). They assured us that there were hogs in there, but we set up a game plan for the next day and ended up systematically scouting out the area. There wasn't any sign of any larger hogs anywhere in that quarter. There weren't any food sources other than the feeders and no water except for a handful of small ponds. No sign of any larger hogs at all. If they were there, we'd have seen something of them or at least some active signs. We're pretty close, so it didn't cost us too much, but you're better off saving your money and finding a better place. They might have changed things up some since, but I wouldn't bet on it.

There's some public land down here in S.E. Okla. on Lake Texoma that at times has some fairly large hogs,(I killed a 400 pd. one 2 wks ago) Mac11700 from Missori was down here the first of Feb. ,but only got to hunt about 1 full day. I hav'nt been out on the lake in over a wk. but the last time out found tracks that should belong to a 500 pd. plus hog. If you can't find something closer,P.M. me,and maybe someone down here can put you on some hogs. I know of 3 people here in Durant that are on this forum on the H/R NEF forum. Digger

Ditchdigger, I live in Texas so I am kind of confused about what license I need to hunt feral hogs in Oklahoma. I read the regs on the Oklahoma website. They say I need a filled or unfilled deer tag but I am not sure if that means if there is an open deer season or not. I know I need a hunting license but what about when there is no deer season on? Could I get away with just a basic hunting license?

Rickt; You only need a general hunting license,you can get a 5 day license for about $46 (I think) . In my area its year round season,and eastern Okla. its during rifle deer season. Digger

I own some land between Lequire and Red Oak in Latimer county that I bought for deer hunting and happily I have not seen any hog sign on it yet. I am going to buy a deer license to hunt next fall, When does the hunting licence go out of date in Oklahoma, here in Texas it is no longer good after August 31st. If I were to buy a deer license now would it still be good this coming fall?

Since I've been researching for some hunting in OK and I can answer that. Their license runs thru the calendar year. Jan. 1 to Dec. 31. First state I've ever heard of that does that.

Kansas is like that also. If you buy a license on Dec 1 it still expires on Dec 31. Its not 1 year from issue date. I wish it would be like that though.

I find it interesting that we have to buy seperate licenses to hunt with bow, primitive and modern weapons respectively and that the number of tags is only limited by your wallet.

I am from Delaware and one license covers Bow, Muzzleloader and Shotgun season. But when I go to Maryland, I have to buy a Bow, and Muzzleloader stamp to use them in there seasons. The Rifle/Shotgun comes with the license. This is for Deer, we don't have hogs in either State.
