Hey all   :-)

I am a rifle nut, don't shoot get a chance to shoot many revolvers or pistols at that as much as I would like -although I do own many   .  I have been looking at the SW 686 with the 6" barrel.  My guy has one for $570.00.  What do you guys think of these pistolas?  What type of accuracy have you achieved off the bench?  Also, do you shoot them with the factory hogues that come on or have you replaced the grips?  Basically.. What is your overall impression of this gun?

Thanks for your help  :D  Tight groups,

Wow, you are the impatient type aren't you?

Personally I think even that lower price is a bit much. I've owned several of them over the years in 4", 6" and 8-3/8" barrels. I had one with the four position adjustable front sight long years ago. I could do an inch at 25 yards freehand with it when I was having a good day. But that was back when my eyes still worked right.    I can't do that now from a bench with irons.

To me they are too darn heavy for a .357, especially for a toting gun. OK if just used at the range. They are now offering a 5" without the barrel under lug which weights the same as the old 6" model 66 did. I always liked that gun and sure would like to get my hands on a nice used one. But atlas I can't find one any where.

Even that newer 5" job around here is less than you say you're paying thru Auction Arms.

GB,

Me?  Impatient?    Noooooooooooooooooo  :-D

It's a real nice gun, I quoted the gun around here at my usual dealers and they were wanting 570 for it.  Will be mostly a range gun, don't know about any hunting plans at this point.  :D  All of the revolvers I own right now - .38 snub, sw 19 .357, sw airweight .38, charter arms undercover .38 all have shorter barrels, Just wanted a nice revolver to have fun with and that will be fairly accurate at longer distances that the shorter barreled guns may not give me or let me shoot.   :D  Regards,

I carried a 4 inch for almost 15 years of police work before the transition to autos.  Like just about every other police agency we switched to glocks.  Personally, I would have rather kept the 686 having cut my teeth on one.  I probably have 50,000 rounds thru that gun now.

Sure..theyre a bit heavy, but they are great guns and for your intended purpose you couldnt do much better.  I like nice wood on mine and since you arent going to carry it day in and day out in every type of wheather condition I would lose the rubber and find somtheing real purdy to put on that 686.

I have the new 686 with the 5 inch barrel and half underlug and its a great gun but cost me about $529 here in NY.  I dont think you did bad paying what you did for yours.

Sgt,

It is a great gun - I can't wait to get it.  Im wondering if GB hasn't priced these guns lately, but they are not to be found around here under 550-600.

Reckon we're just getting better deals than you guys. But then the place I do business usually beats most dealers by a fair bit. He saved some guys well over $200 a gun on a couple of FA revolvers last month.

GB,

Maybe so.. I used to purchase my guns at Galyans, my guy there gave me very good prices.. They recently went to Dick's, and can no longer sell pistolas.. DOH!  The gun I bought on AA is 10% above wholesale.   :D

Hey GB...I think that maybe they tax us Northeners more than you Southern boys and drive those costs way up!  LOL

Seriously... and unfortunately, I have seen price differences based on regions and that surprises me.  I know that in certain places out west for instance that they hammer those poor fellas on any outdoor related merchandise.
