I just bought this gun on Monday for the same reason that your looking for. My dealer ordered the kel-tec 9mm for me and when I went to pick it up he told me for whatever reason he is not big on the kel-tecs. I dont know why. I have bought a lot over the years from him. He told me that he would sell me this S&W for $25 more than the kel-tec. He said after a year if I don't like it he would swap me back. It seems to weight about the same and is ever so slightly bigger than the 9mm Kel=tec. I have not fired it yet so I have no opinion on that but feels much more substantial than the other small guns I looked at.

I have the kel-tec and like it. The Kahr is a bit smaller but is 6 shot compared to the kel-tec 10 rounds. There is a big difference in price. They both weigh the same.

I live in FL, in the hot summers and winters I carry a Kel-Tec P11 (9mm) in a Fobus holster.  The Kel-Tec goes right under a t-shirt or tank top with no problem.  I really like the P11 it shoots very well.

I like the Kahr PM9,but...out of a really short barrel, the 9x19mm is not much better than a .380. So, I would recommend getting the P3AT or dressing around the Glock 26. Have you thought about a Bellyband holster to wear with the shorts...can carry pretty well I hear...debating on trying one myself.

Paul S.  If your dealer is selling you a new smith for $25 more than the Kel-tec new you should really thank him as I believe there is a little more of a price difference than $25 between the two items NEW. :D    JIM

Ok what is the smallest lightest 9mm for under $300?  I am seriously looking at the Steyr S-9 which is selling new for about $270.

Here's a link to a kahr p9 vs glock 26. Note the pm9 is quite a bit smaller than the p9 in both barrel and grip. Width is the same

I high recommend the Kahr PM9.  with the 6 rd mag fits in your front pocket of hiking shorts. If you carry in a belt holster you can use a 7 rd mag w/the extension. This is the smallest usable gun I have found. Its small enough to carry and big enough to shoot. With 124 Gold dots I have put 6 rds in the size of my hand at 25 yds. This thing shoots easier then a j frame

:-D  Yes he made me a great deal. He buys a lot of guns most of which are way out of my price range. His son is married to my wife's niece. And to top it off he is a preacher. He made me a great deal on a used Kimber back last summer. Most of his clients want high end stuff. He let me hold a $10,550 English made side by side shot gun on Monday. I was scared to death I was going to drop it. It's a little sad for me that a gun can be 3 times what my truck is worth. Guess I need a better truck.

cknight98....

The Kel-Tec P3AT instruction booklet indicates (on page 3) that the Kel-Tec P3AT (9mm Short aka .380 ACP) can use +P ammo, but not as a steady diet.

The .380 ACP could be called a "9x17" if you used a European type designation... and with the MAGTECH "Gold" +P 85 grain JHP ammo at almost 1100 fps, the .380 has a muzzle energy of 221 ft/lbs.

Comparatively, a .38 Special using a 158 grain lead bullet has a muzzle energy of 235 ft/lbs... almost the same as the .380 or 9mm Short.

I've carried a P3AT anytime I'm outside the house for almost a full year now... and the more I carry it, the more I "appreciate" the little pistol.

With 6+1 rounds, a very small size (about as small as they get) and a mere 12 oz. (weighed fully loaded on sensitive, accurate scales) in weight, I think it's a fine little carry pistol with enough power to extract your fanny from a problem should one occur.

At less than $300, I think the Kel-Tec P3AT .380 is the hands-down "winner" of the highly concealable, BUT STILL EFFECTIVE self-defense pocket pistols.

What about the 32 NAA, it's a necked down 380! Kahr makes them for NAA.

:cb2: Does anyone remember the Strasbourg tests? They quit using the .38 snubbies on the second test. The .380s — fired from a Sig — performed just as well as the 4" .38s. Now that doesn't mean I want a small .380 or a .38 snubbie for self-defense, but sometimes the .380 is underrated.

The Rohrbaugh R9 is the smallest / lightest 9mm currently in production ...

... at nearly $1000, it is not a cheap gun but then again, how much is your life worth or the lives of your loved ones? There are a number of cheaper alternatives, including the Smith & Wesson 3913TSW ...

... (shown above next to the Rohrbaugh R9) but none of them are as small as the Rohrbaugh R9. The R9 fills a very special nitch -- it's the gun that I carry when I'm "not carrying" -- if you know what I mean ;)

By the way, Para's Hawg 9 (their 9mm version of the Warthog) is a double stacked version of the Para Carry ...

... which is pictured above next to my Rohrbaugh R9. As you can see, the Rohrbaugh R9 is still a good amount smaller which is very important when it comes to DEEP concealment.

The Kahr p9 is the best for that function. The Rohrbaugh R9 will NOT stand any +p loads let alone +p+ loads and the Kahr will. Be sure and check it out.

Still like the SW 3913 or 14.  Single stack and 23 ounces.  I have a 3914, the blued version.  Not a pocket gun but fills the 380acp size niche.

Is it any good? I just submitted an application for CCW in Utah. So I'm in the market for a smaller gun. Something in .40 or .45.

The Firestar is a good gun and you can still find them, BUT they are considerably heavier.  My vote goes to the Kahr.  I have a P9 Covert (short butt) and my wife has a P9.  We both love them!  And I'm told by a LEO trainer friend of mine (who should know), that a +P+ out of the Kahr will preform right with the beloved 125 gr 357 mag in a short barrel.  Buy them, carry them, use them if you have to.  44 Man

I wound up getting a ten round Springfied Ultra Compact .45. I've shot it a couple of times now and it has quite the muzzle flip :?

I think I would have to shoot someone only once though :-)

I wanted to revive this thread as I am reading it for the first time and it fits my situation.

I am trying to replace my Para P12 for a carry gun as now my P12 sits in my dresser when I leave the house. I would like something smaller/lighter. My thoughts are...

Kel-Tec P11, Kahr CW9, Taurus Milenium, Glock 26 (still a bit big, I think) and most recently a S&W 342PD in .38+P (which was just recently brought to my attention...10 0z.) I know it's a revolver, but 10 oz.!

Any thoughts would be great.

Thank you,
