.44 spl revolver
« on: February 24, 2005, 06:01:55 PM »
hi i posted this in the general handgun forum but i mean't to post it here. anyways i'm looking for a good .44 spl mostly for woods bumming. i'd like it with fixed sights. the freedom arms are great but out of my price range and i don't really want a ruger just because they don't make a dedicated .44 spl. but the only one i've seen is made by emf i think. someone said u.s firearms or something. any advice on one of these? or of another one i left out?

us firearms guns are top shelp but there just about as expensive as a FA gun. You may want to look into cimmeron arms. I just had a bad experience with there sevice dept. But bottom line is there a nice gun for the $ and make what your looking for.

Here are some links for outfits offering .44 Special SAAs.

www.usfirearms.com

www.uberti.com

www.emf-company.com

www.cimarron-firearms.com

www.awaguns.com

The suggested retail prices are usually far above what you can actually puchase the item for on the open market. Some times the websites have dealer lists. You may be able to find a dealer close to your location that can help you that way.

Good luck!

I think I was wrong about Uberti offering .44 Specials. I believe the Cattleman revolvers just come in .357, .45 Colt and .44-40.

I've only handled the open top revolvers. I think they are not-quite copies of the 1871 Colt aimed at cowboy-action shooters. Cowboy action loads are generally pretty mild.

It isn't a good idea to push those 1873 SAA replicas. You will not enjoy it either. If you want Corbon/Buffalo Bore performance, there are better revolvers out there for it.

Definately the model P.  I have an AWA Peacekeeper and it is an excellent gun for woods walking.  If you choose to you can run up to 8.0 gr of Unique with a 240 gr cast bullet and that will do 950/1000 fps depending on the gun.  My normal load is 7.3 gr with the same cast bullet at 850 fps.  The open top would be fun but should be limited to no more than factory .44 spl loads (ie 750 fps).  Hope you enjoy whatever you buy, I love mine!  44 Man

Hey, I make one lucky shot (in front of witnesses) and everybody thinks I'm Wyatt Earp!  When I was in my 20's (long time ago) my brother-in-law asked how good I could shoot then said "hit this" as he threw a tomato juice can into the air.  I drew and drilled it.  I've NEVER been able to hit an areal target before or since.  But there is a time to talk and a time to just shut up and smile.  Thanks guys
