Glocks for lefties....
« on: February 25, 2005, 06:52:20 AM »
Thinking about getting a Glock and have a couple of questions....
Being left handed, how ambi are these guns and/or can ambi parts be added i.e. slide stop, mag release etc...(actually I don't think there is any etc.. to a glock, no decocker, saftey etc...)

Thx,
R
Cheers,

I'm a lefty.

I think they are pretty ambi.  You have to get used to hitting the mag release with your trigger or middle finger. This is no biggie if you ask me as I shoot IDPA and do not feel slowed by this.  In fact some righty's complain about the mag release for them because if you grip the gun a certain way your palm counters pressing the mag release with your thumb.

The extended slide release ($15) is a nice option (a friend has one), but I don't find the stock one offensive enough to have bothered yet; probably because I do the slingshot method of putting one in the pipe.

Let me qualify by saying it's the first and only handgun I own.  Those trained on other guns might not adapt as happily to the Glock as I have.

Glock 'revised' safety rules :)

1) Keep your finger off the trigger.
2) Keep your GD finger off the trigger.
3) Keep your finger off the GD trigger.
4) Keep your GD finger off the GD trigger.

Basically, a good holster is the 'manual' safety for a Glock.

I didn't think that Glocks had a slide release. Isn't that actually a slide block to keep it from being pulled back too far?

It is actually a slide stop or slide lock depending on who you are talking to, it is designed to hold the slide in the open position after the last round in a mag is fired or just to hold the slide in the open position. You aren't supposed to press it to release the slide forward, but lots of folks use it that way. If the slide is locked back you should pull back on the slide, the slide stop will drop out of the way and then release the slide, that will chamber your round. Good shooting!!

I'm a lefty and Glocks are my go to guns.  I have others for fun and diversity but if its serious business Glock is the only way to go, especially if you're a lefty.

The lack of an ambidextrous mag release on a Glock is one of the reasons that I was considering a Springfield XD 40 over the Glock Model 22 or 23.  I have to actually handle both and hit that mag release to see if it really matters.  I have actually shot a Glock 23 at the range recently and I liked the way it felt...Never shot an XD though...I don't know anyone that actually owns one.

i shoot about 5000 rounds thru a Glock 34 each summer...it came with the extended mag. release... i took that out, and put in a standard model...i was dropping a mag. every once in a while...that was not acceptable to me ...have no problem with this one or my 36...D451

I did purchase a used Glock 23 after I made that previous post because I could not turn down the sweet deal that I got...The only thing I did to it was add an extended mag release so that I can hit that release easier with my index finger.  I love shooting this gun and I have no complaints about it.  Being left handed and owning a Glock has not been a detriment to me.

I have a Glock 17 and am a lefty. I have fired other handguns Sig and Springfiled XD and they were not as lefty friendly as my glock.
