Will Ruger install a new cylinder
« on: February 26, 2005, 06:05:00 AM »
I have a 45 Vaquero and want a fitted 45ACP cylinder,  I have been told Ruger will do it.  When I called and talked to some lady at Ruger she said no they would not.  Did I just get the wrong person?  ET

Depends.  Ruger will not make changes/modifications for any model that would result in a configuration of a non-cataloged model.  There were no convertable Vaqueros made as cataloged items.  However, there were some made as special "distributor editions" for, I believe, Camfour.  May be easiest to try calling them again and explain this to them.  If it's still a no-go from them, keep your eyes on ebay.

Some of the smiths who work on Ruger SAs might have a .45 ACP cylinder laying around. Jim Stroh, Hamilton Bowen, etc. At one time, Bowen listed some factory parts, take-offs, on his website. I don't know if he still does. He also has cylinders with pilot holes that can be chambered in whatever favor you want.

A cylinder off of Ebay may not fit. You MAY get lucky, but they are "fitted" for a reason.

I found a shop with some ACP cylinders, out of the 4 or 5 cylinders they had, and the 3 guns I tried them in, 1 cylinder fit 1 gun.

Something else to be aware of, if you send a gun to Ruger for any reason, they WILL remove ANY non-factory part or modified part and replace it with a factory part, and you do not get the custom part back.
