Author Topic: picked up my .30-30 today (Read 571 times)

I ordered my Handi Rifle from Wally World and they called me last night to say it was in. I picked it up today with just a little confusion. things there just don't operate what you would call really smooth. Oh well so much for the big corps.
this thing has about the lightest trigger pull I've ever seen on any production gun. A little creepy right out of the box. I'll do a poor man's trigger job on it later. I might even take it to a friends who had a trigger pull gauge. It's almost like the set trigger on a muzzleloader. I'm not complaining mind you just a little surprised.
I've also never seen such a trigger lock before. MAN!!! You guys should have warned me about that. I got lots to do today I'm hoping I'll get the grease off of it this evening.
My son is just about convinced about these little jewels now too. Has anyone ever mounted a peep sight right on the barrel before?

What type of stock did you get? Does it have a recoil pad or just a plain Butt Plate? Are those the same open sights that come on the Tracker II barrel? I am still hoping I can find a 357 NIB, but those hopes are dwindling and the 30-30 is my next choice. I have read that it is the most popular deer hunting caliber. Don't know if that's true, but I read it SOMEWHERE.

The good ole 30-30 has always been in the top sales of reloading dies for ever...and has been a perinnial favorite of hunters since it came out...it's one of those cartridges that just does better than the ballistics shows for it...and always will...

While it's lost it's majic long ago...I would be willing to bet that it has taken more deer than anyother cartridge...and quite a few of everything else...

I'm not sure about the sights as far as related to the Tracker II. This one has a post front sight and the rear that adjusts for elevation. It did come with a nice looking recoil pad.
What I really couldn't get over was the trigger pull. It's great! I am halfway thinking to make a pack with my self to never shoot jacketed bullets thru this barrel, as everything I think I need to do can be done with cast bullets. Lord knows they sure are cheaper.

I can't say enough about the two 30-30's that reside at our residence. These two have been responcible for our freezer always having venison in it. The ease of use of these little rifles definately earn their namesake, "Handi" These rifles at 38", swings easily from an elevated stand and with a Leupold compact scope stays light as well. My older pre-bancruptcy mid 1980's version is what I consider my ultra-lite rifle because of its slim profile barrel. We reload for ours with various jacketed bullets in the 130 grain range and these are spire points from Barnes and Hornady.

I use a Franks Wrist reloader purchased from the TC Custom shop catalog, and it is amazing the speed with which one can reload the chamber if necessary. The thing I really like about the 30-30 is that with the rim, we haven't had one stuck spent case sticking problem, unlike our rimless versions.............Chainsaw

My son just couldn't wait to shoot ours so I let him pop a round off out the back door last night. I did make him run a patch down the barrel first though. We didn't clean the chamber it's self very good though and the first round up the spout did stick. I haven't cleaned anything but the more so I'm sure there's multiple reasons for the case to stick.
The more I mess around with these little rifles the more I like them. The utter simplicity of the thing is fascinating.

Rusty: Congrats on your new purchase!

Please keep us posted on how it shoots. How do you like the factory iron sights?

I may have to order a 30-30 Handi to supplement my .243 Handi. I may well leave the 30-30 iron sighted for close up, ultra-fast handling.

I think the factory sights are pretty fair. It begs for a peep sight though. The first thing I intend to do is firelap the barrel as soon as my lapping compound gets here from Veral Smith. I ordered that on the 5th of Feb. I think I'll order my first batch of bullets from Cabelas too. They have 500 Laser cast .30-30 bullets for $22.00
