45colt cylinder AND +P Ammo
« on: February 26, 2005, 11:05:14 AM »
just got back from the woods and the 45+p shot good. The thing is the cylinder was hard to turn after shooting?. Was kinda like the brass expanded to the point of it being hard to rotate cylinder? Anyone out there can help me out with this one. This is the first time I have shot this 45colt so dont know how it shoots with normal loads. HELP.

There are alot of things that can cause this .
Are the primers still seated flush ?
Does it hangup with ammo before its fired ?
Is the gate detent spring in its proper place ? f not you will see it sticking up slightly at the bottom rear of the cylinder window.
I have a vaquero that required some minor polishing work on the back of the frame , cases would hangup .
try some factory loads and see if it still does it .

one other thing that can do it is leaving oil in your cylinder chambers after cleaning or not cleaning sizing lube off of the cases on reloads. bottom line is though your going to get more case set back with hotter loads

Its not normal , I just did a function test on my vaquero and fired 200 rounds of Warm +p without cleaning . This is for 2 reasons . I was testing for leading and to make sure the gun works correctly . The last 2 new rugers I bought needed repairs .
When I carry a gun into the feild it has got to work 100% no doubts

ok here is a little more info; the cylinder turns fine loaded before shooting and after with +p ammo it looks like it rubs on the rims of the cases it turns but is rugging the cases. The cases eject normal with rod. Im shooting 300gr PMC +p,think its going to the smith in the morning.

I wouldn't leave lube on the cases nor would I leave oil in the cylinders.  If you do, You'll get the equivalent of "bolt thrust" in your revolver.  Case expansion is part of the design.  Like the suspension system on your truck; tires, shocks and springs all act together.  By allowing the cases to recoil freely, you are inviting a possible dangerous situation in higher end loads.

You could be getting a little blowback with the brass and a rough cylinder allows the brass to stay out a little.  I use a drill, 0000 steel wool and a little flitz.  Polish out any machine marks in the cylinder.  Also check your primers.  Sometimes a hotter load with a softer primer will allow the primer to crater around the firing pin.   This will also cause the cylinder to feel like it is hanging up.

Prior posts are right on.  No oil in cylinder.  Make sure brass is clean and no lube residue.  You want that brass to move.  If it is sooo tight it is binding, you have a pressure problem.

Good luck.  Enjoy that 45.
