110 gr spire point for Deer in the .30-30 handi
« on: February 26, 2005, 11:41:00 AM »
Has anyone here tried the 110gr Spire point in the .30-30 for Deer size game.
I see some published velocities are near 2700fps with H335.

  Any opinions?

Seems way to frangable of bullet even at 30-30 velocities...and being able to get upwards of 2700 fps with some of the lighter X-bullets that will work... I don't know that I would even want to try...I'd even be willing to try a  BT bullets in 125 grain before going that way...

They didn't work very well, at least on the two deer I have seen shot with them. Of course that isn't a good number of shots to use to determine how well they work either. One deer was shot again with a shotgun after being hit at less than 50 yards, and the other was recovered a few days later. By that time the coyotes, foxes and crows had already had their way with the carcass so I couldn't tell what the bullet did. The deer that was recovered intact had taken a shoulder shot, and the bullet fragmented-he wasn't going fast so another shot with the shotgun was pretty easy. I would use something heavier. Just my  :money:
