45-70 Scope question
« on: February 26, 2005, 01:38:50 PM »
I just bought a 14" 45-70 barrel.  I was trying to decide what to put on it.  I have a Bushnell selectable reticle red dot sight and a 2x bushnell scope.

Which should I use and how should I mount it?  2 or 3 ring?  Weaver base or something else.  My first hard recoiling barrel.

Some how I have ended up with several barrel, but can't have too many!!

It only gets worse with age. i actually woke up at 4:30 this morning, because there is a gunshow in town this weekend & Ed is there with 4 tables and 250+ barrels laid out, all nice and i can hear them calling me...

The .45-70's i have had were accurate enough to benefit from higher magnification... mine are easily 100 yard + guns, and 100 yars is long way to my eyes when using non-magnifying scopes.

I prefer to use 3 ring mounts on my larger calibers. I like the millett all-steel weaver style bases, using 3 rings, on several big bores. Works great. The SSK mounts which are great but a little pricey, i use the TSOB on my .358 JDJ. Also have a couple of Redfield 3 ring setups on my .445 supermag pistol & carbine.

I have a weaver base and 2 burris zee rings holding on my 2x nikon on my 45/70.  I haven't had a problem with the mounts shooting loose.
