Questions about barrel program
« on: February 26, 2005, 03:11:45 PM »
I sent my Ultra 243 in for repair (so it would shoot 100 grain stuff), since they had the gun, it would be a cheaper to order a 308 barrel now, or so I told my wife :-) . so I want to ask you folks some questions before I call H&R and make a fool out of myself.

I ordered a 308 bull barrel, listed under Ultra barrels, price- $93.00, my invoice says $82.00 + fitting fee $15.00 (total $97.00).

Since I ordered a "Ultra "barrel I would expect to get a Ultra scope rail. My 243 rail measures 6 inches and has a set screw at the end to rest against the barrel, the 308 rail measures 5 inches and no set screw.

With the 243, they sent a picture of a target that they shot with the barrel ( I hope it shoots better than the photo shows). Do they send a picture along with the new barrel?

Do I need to make a call?

I wish it would stop raining so I could try shooting the 243 and see if they fixed it. It key holes 100 grain ammo and sent me the same barrel back.

 Thanks for any info.

Does the picture have key holes in it?

When I had them replace the barrel on my BC they sent a target with it.  It was 1", 3 shot, group at 100yds.

Did you fill out their order form for the ULTRA if so I'd surely call them back to make sure of what happened.
God, Family, and guns, in that order!

Handirifle

I did not fill out there form, I called CS and asked what info they needed and then typed a letter explaining everything.

The target they supplied shows 3 nice holes, Yesterday I fired 4 rounds of 100 grain Rem. ammo (didn't have much time), Second round was the perfect shape of the bullet going thru sideways, 3rd was partial, the other 2 were fine

Just an idea, call them and ask what brand and weight of ammo they used on your target and try that one (If they're 100gr).  If it still won't shoot, then ask for another barrel.. and send them your targets proving your point.

Sorry about not replying sooner, I wrote last night and must have hit the wrong button cause its not there today.

Called H&R 2 days ago and talked to the guy in charge of repair. He was surprized that my 243 was still key holing (it doesn't happen every time but at least 1 time in 8 shots). He told me that they fired 8 rounds of Fed 100 grain HP thru it with no problems. He told me that he would be happy to replace the barrel, but that mine shot so well he could not guarantee that the new would do the same. Since I can shoot clover leafs with lighter bullets all day long at 100 yards I think I will hang on to what I have and since I now have the 308 barrel, if I need more than 85 grain bullets I can just change barrels ( like for the wild pigs that like to destroy my fields).

I also asked why I did not get the Ultra scope rail with my 308 bull barrel. He told me that they don't like to send them since people tend to tighten the daylights out of the set screw and that creates all sorts of other problems, but if I wanted one he would mail it to me.
