Does anyone know the SportSouth item # ?  They don't list it anymore.  Did Wal-Mart carry them when they were in production?  How long ago was that anyway?

I believe that the .357 rifle is out of production.  The factory cranked out 100 barrels but it is first come, first serve.  Shame you don't live in Georgia.  There are two gun shops near Atlanta that still have special edition .357 handis in stock!

I sent Franklins an email and never got a response.  Maybe I will try again.  I still have the info you sent me.  Maybe I should call them, that might be better.  I don't have a FFL so I would have to figure out how to get it done.  I know a couple guys who do, so maybe that is an option.  I thought if that store still had a couple that maybe a Walmart SOMEWHERE might too.  That is why I was inquiring if anyone new what the SportSouth item # for it was.  Thanks for the response.

Hey Cookieman sometimes those guys at Franklin's can be a little flaky,so I would ask to speak with Mark Franklin if you call.they do have several of the .357 handi rifles in stock.Last time I was in there ,they had several in the rack and a few in the box in the back. :D

You can use the FFL dealer locator at the link below to locate a local FFL transfer agent.

Just call themm and ask for Mark. Store hours are 10-10 Mon-Sat, Mark is there during the week. Clarence, the founder, is dead now. Mark is his son, a daughter works the store too but I can't recall her name. If no satisfaction, ask for Mrs. Franklin

Mark runs it a good bit differently than his dad did YEARS ago but I still remember her tucked away in the back office at the old store amid PILES of paperwork . . . alot has changed since then!

Yeah, but if she gets stirred up about it, cookieman will have a rifle in hand for sure.

You're right, Mark doesn't run the same store Clarence did. I worked for them back in the early ninties, and it wasn't even the same store in those days as it was when Clarence was working the counter. Guess everything changes. cookieman should still be able to get a rifle from them though.

Yep!  Most people consider it to be in Athens Georgia but the address is technically Bogart.  You got the right place!

Thanks to all who joined the String and put in their $.02.  I will let everyone know how it comes out.  This is ONE that the CFO won't get a say in.  Yeah, Yeah, I know!  That's OK, it will be worth it, if I end up with a 357.

Thank you all.

You are correct Jason.Jph 45 did you like handi rifles when you worked for franklins? The counter guys think I am crazy for liking them.Every time I go in there,10 guys could be behind the counter talking and not one of them ask you if you need help. It's kind of a shame, because it could be a great sporting goods store if the service was a little better.I prefer BULL'S EYE in old downtown Lawerenceville Ga.Those guys are always great and they have quite a selection of Handi rifles. They won a award from H&R one year for selling the most in the region. They will also swap stocks around for you if you want something different. It's a great mom and pop gun store/shooting range. They always get my business first if I can help it.There prices are also better than franklins.I bought my Kimber 45 from them for $100.00 dollars cheaper. Both were new and the same model.Go figure, thats what turned me on to the place.I always shop around for the best price anyway, but I always seem to end up there. :D not trying to bash franklins it's just there customer service is lacking at times.

In the days I worked there, there was no Handi Rifle. H&R made switch barrel model, generally 20 guage with either 30-30 or 22 Hornet. You'd see an occasional Model 158 (30-30) After Clarence left the counter the service from the counter guys went in a downhill direction. There were several exellent exceptions to this general trend, but it was not unusual to find a colledge student behind the counter whose claim to fame was "I read it in a magazine". This is not the appropriate place to discuss other problems I encountered both as a customer and an employee. A new shop has opened up in Hull (between Athens and Danielsville on US29 North) Let us hope that over time honest competion makes both shops better stores for the customers and owners, it could be a situation where everybody wins instead of winner take all.

I was in there this weekend.  They seemed a little friendlier and had decent prices on some things but guns were about the same a Franklin's.  You definitely have to WANT to buy a gun to get it at Franklins . . . even though it is a huge store and must still do the business no one would ever ask if they could help you.  Bring your patience and don't expect anyone to want to make a sale!  Bullseye in Lawrenceville is a good shop but I have not been there in a while . . . definitely need to put that on my calendar!
Cookieman, don't forget that Adventure Outdoors in Lawrenceville has one left with a camo stock . . . they are listed in the Georgia dealer section of the H&R website.

Jph are you talking about georgia outdoor sports?I think that is the one you are talking about.I saw a Rossi single shot in 17 HMr that was stainless there for $279.00 dollars.I instantly walked out of that place laughing. That's more than a Rossi should ever cost. After I looked at that price tag I knew that I probably wouldn't buy anything there.I will say that they did ask me if I needed help though.I guess they still beat franklin's.

That is the one he is talking about I believe . . . I was in there and they had Sidekicks for $159 which is about average.  However, I bought a small game belt that was not on sale but marked 30% lower than even the best internet site has it for and and only about 60% of msrp!

Called Franklins this morning.  All they have left is the 357Max.  I decided to pass on that.  It would be awfully expensive to just go shooting.  I spoke with Arch, after a long wait on hold.  Mom took the call and eventually I got to talk with Arch.  He was helpful and nice on the phone and more than happy to sell me a gun.  I just decided to pass on the Max.  Would have cost me almost $300 by the time I paid the transfer fee to anyone up here.  I can get my TDC 20ga and have money left over at that rate.  OR, just buy the 30-30 and put a 357 barrel on it too.
Thanks for all you help.  EVERYONE!

That does not seem right . . . as of last week there were FOUR .357 MAGs out on the floor with blonde laminated stocks . . . NONE of them read MAX.
Shame it takes an FFL to get one on your end!

Cookieman they had several 357 handi rifles the other day.I find it hard to believe they sold them all.Did you ask them to go look in the single shot rifle section?I would have taken the Max.It is a scarce caliber to find. You can shoot 357 magnum ammo in it also.Once again I say customer service, good grief how hard is it to just go check the rack and the shelves? All they did was look at the computer screen and not check.I bet you there is still atleast 3 357 rifles in the rack.      Here is the Telephone number of a real gun shop.Bulls Eye, the number is (770) 963-6556.Last time I was in there they had a stainless 357 Mag rifle with a survivor stockset on it.It was used but looked to be in excellent condition. They will probably even change the stock set if you don't like the survivor one. They have done it for me in the past. :x
