does anyone make a 6.5 swede barrel for the contender? seems like a  good idea.

any risk of acting agressively is most certainly outweighed by the risk of sitting on your  butt and  acting like a liberal.

The swede is too much pressure for the contender to handle.

but its only 3k  more than a  .30-30, and a lot less than a .223 .

The issue isn't just pressure, but the area over which that pressure operates.  The .223 has a small internal case diameter, the .30-30 is mid-sized, while the 6.5 is virtually the same as a .30-06.  Multiply the internal cross-sectional area of each case by their chamber pressure and you get the force trying to stretch the frame.  Very rough examples:

.223- .101 sq.in. x 55,000 psi = 5555 pounds of force.
6.5 - .126 sq.in. x 51,000 psi = 6426 pounds of force.

The Swede applies about 16% more force, enough to potentially cause damage to the frame.  And the Swede is not a low-pressure cartridge in all loadings.  Norma factory ammo produced 51,000 psi in Accurate Arms' pressure barrel.

The savage is one of those that is riding the edge of acceptable in the contender. There are a lot of guys shooting them without problems, but it is pushing the limits. If you want into the 25 or 6.5 range, look at the JDJ varieties or something off of the 30-30 case. It is still going to be hard to outdo the 7-30 by much in the smaller calibers if you are looking at a hunting round.

me thinks the 7-30 waters is the recipe i'm looking for. i don't load and there is factory loaded stuff for it.  probably a 12" barrel would be a good compromise between portability and velocity.
thanks.

Lone Star...
Thanks Dude!  I have been reading gun stuff for 35 years, and I have never seen that point explained.
I have one weapon and lots of toys.
If life turns really ugly, the one closest to hand is a weapon.
All the rest are toys.
