First annual Spring Mortar and/or Cannon Contest
« on: February 09, 2003, 07:14:29 AM »
All right it's time to think about shooting in competition!

The first match is the Spring Woodchuck Open.

Rules:

Any blackpowder mortar or cannon.
Any (legal) projectile.
Any (safe) range.

Target:  Any currently occupied woodchuck (rockchuck, badger or whatever) hole (unless restricted by hunting season).

First place will be awarded to an actual varmint being flattened.
Second prize will be awared to a direct hit in the domicile of said varmint.
Honable mention to serious damage being done to said domicile.

Contest will start immediately and close on first and second prizes being awarded.  Photographs must be posted to verify entry.  Last years trophies don't count - honor system will be employed.

Void where prohibited by law.

I live in the mountains of Virginia and earlier this week

I SAW THE FIRST WOODCHUCK (ground hog for you locals).

Admitedly it was just a young-un, but brown fur and grazing on grass.

It's getting close to woodchuck hunting time with the mortars!!

Presumably any varmint since there are no woodchucks here in the desert southwest.

That gets me thinking? I wonder what a bowling ball would do to a Rockchuck?

Lord, That was wrong. Please bless all the pygmies in New Guiana ;D

I think a bowling ball would be about right - any live critter within range is going to be motivated to HIDE when he hears it go off!

Since this is the THIRD ANNUAL SPRING competition, we'll cut it of on the first day of summer.  Entries must be mailed on or before the first day of summer, 2006!

NO!  No matter HOW DESERVING they may be, there is a limit of ZERO when it comes to people.  No matter HOW squirrley they may behave!

A few minutes after I wrote that deliberately misspelled line, I was informed my youngest brother had a major heart attack, then an hour later I was informed he had died. So right now I don't feel all that good.

Thanks everyone. We are doing OK although it hit my sister the hardest. I inherited his two very spoiled cats.

They're about 8 to 10 years old. Johnny5 in front and Spot in back. they each weigh in at over 20 lbs and are huge (long/tall). they can pull stuff off a kitchen counter while standing on the floor.

Jeeper -

Those fur-lined critters can be the best of friends too.  Here's Blackberry sitting in the last box of books before it was filled and mailed:

Blackberry looks to be a fair sized cat or is that mostly fur.

12 lbs of fur-lined fat.  Mother was pure-bred Persian, father unknown alley cat.  Strange cat - won't eat anything except DRY catfood.  Pure spoiled inside-the-house cat.  Doesn't like to be held much, but is most comfortable and adept at sitting on shoulders - even when I'm moving.  Best pix of her are where she's reaching into the golf-ball mortar trying to retrieve the golf ball.

SO, the contest was over on the first day of summer 2006? You didn't get many entries , i'll bet!
Are we going to have the SECOND annual Spring mortar and/or Cannon Contest soon?

How about 2007?

This is, of course the THRID annal contest.  By now you should KNOW that there are three kinds of people in the world - those that can count and those that can't.

And I suppose we shouldn't speculate on how many kinds of spellers/typers/proofreaders there are.   ;D

I generally don't comment about spelling, unless it gets in the way of understanding.

True story:  A group of us college kids were listening to a representative from the employment office.  He was recounting the situation where the gentleman had filled out an employment card in the search for a job as a warehouse manager.  The counselor asked if he'd had experience - yes; asked if this was the job he was looiking for - yes; asked if he was sure he could do the job - yes.  The scepticism was because he'd spelled it "(censored word) house manager".

SOMETIMES spelling does count.

(Note the 'censored word' was done automatically by GBO - at which I take no offense - it's a good way of keeping high standards.)

Not any chucks of any kind here in central TX, but plenty of feral cats.

I think that just adds to the level of difficulty (raises your status if you get one); but it's tough to make a comparison at this point with SO LITLE DATA.

The scarred up leader/tomcat of the colony and I have been having a love-hate relatioship for two years now....he loves to pee on the motor housings in my shop, and I hate it when he sits in front of my truck so i can't squeeze off a shot.

I spent the last couple weeks up in Nevada and out in the northern Arizona brush. I had my 1" gonne and had planned on doing some distance shooting and was looking forward to some jackrabbit and dumplings. Unfortunately, nobody in the greater Las Vegas area, including Bass Pro Shop's muzzleloading section has heard of anything other than FFFg powder and I only got to shoot three rounds...and those were at targets!

We're getting a feral hog hunt together down here for Feb....I just might have to toss something in in the .75 - 1.25" range...and make darn sure the battery is charged on the camcorder!
