Best Hog Shot Ever
« on: February 28, 2005, 02:06:09 AM »

I was slipping through the woods last weekend and I came upon a fresh hog "nest" and these little fellows popped their heads out of the leaves.  I was able to take this "shot".  I'm sure mama was around close but I never did see her.  Thank goodness!!

Great Shot X!  What are the odds that you could come upon a nest.  The closest I ever came is looking in my kids bedrooms.  I call em "a boars nest".

X-Caliber,

Thanks for sharing this great photo with us.  They are cute at that age and will soon grow up.  I read somewhere that you need to harvest 75 percent of a hog population a year to keep it from growning given the breeding rate.

X-caliber,

That photo would make a great cover for Boar Hunter Magazine.  You ought to contact them and see if they would use it.

Glad you enjoyed the pics guys.  They sure are cute little fellers aren't they!   :)

BTW, there are actually three pigs in the photo.  If you look real close you can see the back of a third pig between the two obvious pigs.

 You are lucky mama wasn't a bad one.  I had an old sow try to run up my leg because I got to close to her babies. You can never tell when one will turn on you.

They do breed quick.  A sow will usually breed twice a year having usually, about 4-6 pigglets.  I have seen one old sow with 10 pigglets trailing her.  I don't know if she was the mama of all of them, but all of them were trying to get a shot of milk from her.

Those really are the cutest things I've ever seen.  It's amazing how ugly and nasty they are going to get in about a year - and I won't mind shooting them then. :)
