Trout

Yesterday I headed up into the Wrangell Mountians and snowmachined back into a lake to ice fish. Beautiful day. Sunny, light wind and temperatures in the 30's.

We fished about 6-10 feet of water using shrimp, ice fishing jigs laced with strips of herring and flies.  I limited out with 10 - 15"-20" rainbows and our group of three ended up with 26 fish.

What a great day up here in Alaska. The ice was only 12" thick, normally it is 4' this time of year.

must be the global warming thing
12" is too thick for me so how in the world do you get thru 4' of the stuff--dynamite, and if dynamite why fish for em=they aught to float to the top--at least the do when i have used it down here.
honestly-how do you get thru it and then what do you fish with-as in lures or bait.

In my youth I used an ice spud.  It takes time but for ice under a foot it works. A hand held auger allows you more mobility and a 6" model will really cut through the ice easily(They can be had for less than $60).  For the thick stuff and putting out a lot of tip-ups, a gas powered auger is the only choice. (I bought my 8" for $125 on sale). In some spots back in NY guys used extensions that allowed them to drill through 8 feet of ice.    The most I have ever tried is about 4 feet of ice.

My two sons(bodybuilders) come with me drill all my holes in minutes by hand with an ice auger and go ice skating(w/the babes) while I'm fishing.

i remember reading in F-F-G a few years back where in alaska they went thruogh 10-12 feet of ice with a power auger. it took 3 extensions and these guys had to stand on the seat of there sleds to hold it and the torque almost flipped them off. but the local natives could find spots where the ice was only a few inches thick. i'm not sure of the location but they where catching huge lakers
