Problems with cold blue

Need help with cold instant blue. Have a  barrel  from NEF that had light rust pitting in some areas.Nothing to serious. Well I was going to fix it.First step was Birchwood Casey Blue and Rust remover. Worked great brought the metal to the white and removed the rust.The instant blue is from VAN'S instant gun blue. Read directions. They listed four different degreasers, I bought two of them . Just to be on the safe side( pvc cleaner(clear) and acetone).Followed directions to letter.Use a tooth brush and keep metal wet for three to five minutes.They say the longer it stays on the darker it gets.The problem I'm having is the bluing looks shallow or faint.I repeated the steps but just can't get the barrel to darken any more. Does anybody know what is goig wrong here. Any help would be great. Thanks

Ct kid,
Try Birchwood Casey's coldbluing or their Super Blue and give it another try.  Usually, using acetone and 90% rubbing alcohol should get rid of the oil residue.  Sometimes using a hairdryer will help, but it just takes repeated applications to deepen the color.

I've not used the Van's product but have heard good things about it.. What does the application guide say.  Some cold blues work better if applied to warmish steel.  NO SIZZLE but warm is good..  I use Brownells OxphoBlue.  It is applied and the steel burnished with steel wool between coats.  I was under the impression the Van's product had to be heated after application but read those directions.  The OxphoBlue is ddark, easier to apply and tougher than any cold blue process I've used before.

Draw filed military barrel on a '93 Mauser about 10 years ago. Use Oxpho blue to reblue the barrel, didn't get exact match to reciever, but pretty close. Barrel still looks good  today.

I cold blued a 1100 3yrs ago with oxphoblue and its sill holding up.

All the cold blues have been made obsolete by "Blue Wonder".  Check their website, I've used it, it works, and it doesn't rub off like all the other touch-up blues..

All bluing rubs off!  Even the finest rust blue. Some cold blues are better than others and I've not tried the 'blue wonder' product but I have used the OxphoBlue and it lasts pretty darn well.  I have heard many good things avout the BlueWonder product. Has anyone else tried it?

I use blue wonder currently and really like it ... I do not prefer the birchwood casey products after using blue wonder... ( follow the directions).. Marty
