225 Winchester Contender?
« on: February 28, 2005, 04:58:43 PM »
I saw on Ebay a 225 Contender barrel.
I thought the 225 Winchester had too much pressure for the Contender frame?
If not then how does it compair to the 223 AI or 222 Rem Mag?

Thanks,
Hutch

The data I found shows it at 50,000 cup. The same as the 22-250. There is only about 100fps difference between the two so I don't see where it would be considered safe in a contender. No problem in the Encore but not for the contender. I would want to know where the barrel came from as TC never chambered it in a contender. You don't want some morons basement rechamber job.

A 226 JDJ from SSK is a fireformed 225 Win. Made for  Contender frames.

Yes and a 6.5 JDJ is a blown out .225 Win with little else changed. In another forum/website there is a pretty good explanation of why some higher pressure rounds are suitable and some are not. It has to do with head size, shoulder angle and case brass quality. I have researched this a few times as I was wanting to build something on the order of .22 30-30 Imp., .219 DW or .225 Win ....trying to max out a .22 cal out of a Contender. From what I have read it comes down to .226 JDJ or a .222 Rem mag Imp.

The JDJ rounds based on the .225Win case operate on LESS pressure than factory loads for the .225.  More volume...but less pressure.  Factory .225 loads are too hot for Contender.  I know there are those who load them down and shoot'm in contenders but they have to be careful!!!  To me there is just too much chance of a factory round finding its way in there.  GOOD SHOOTIN',  Walt
