Stock for K31
« on: March 01, 2005, 03:54:14 AM »
Has anyone seen a K31 stocked in something besides the military stock? I've been thinking that it would have even greater potental with a better stock. For me the original stock only works well in the prone position. I'm wanting  to try and build one if I ever get the time. I would like to try it in a target style stock. Saving the original to put it back in of course. LouisV

Since the swiss stocks I think were mated to that particular action and barrel collar for accuracy I wonder if restocking it could affect the accuracy? Some of those old stocks were bedded a lot better than new wood these days? OF course the Swiss rifles were designed to be free floated but putting a action in a new stock can affect accuracy until you get the bugs out. Not all the time but it happens. Jim

Restocking a K31

I have two friends who modified their original K31 stocks. In both cases the accuracy suffered. It is not recommended due to the careful way the Swiss fitted it.
The more I listen,the more I hear....and vice versa.

45/70..it's almost a religion.

Boyds has a replacement sporter type stock for the K31.  Have never seen one "in person" though.  I think you could bed it properly to shoot.  The K31 bedding is different but not mysterious.

I tend to agree with Stan unless you are a expert at stocking guns accuracy and bedding problems can occur. Not always but the problems do exist. Just a friendly reminder not intended to sour your project. Also I have heard Boyd's inletting is not the best so some work will be involved. Jim

Thanks for the input. I guess the easiest thing to try would be one that nothing touched the barrel at all. Something like a K31 crossed with a Tubb 2000.    If I ever get it done I'll try to post some pics. LouisV

Bedding in a preinletted stock such as a Boyd's would probably be about an hours work maybe two if you need to pay special attention to the front lug.
