Bismuth VS Hevi shot.
« on: March 01, 2005, 11:35:50 AM »
I want to get a goose really bad next goose season. So I'm going to get some good expensive shells. Is Bismuth or Hevi shot better for reaching out and killing them?

hevi-shot is better, but i doubt that the shot itself is going to make or break your goose hunt.

Geese are big and very tough, but when you're shooting working geese you can kill them with normal steel loads.  Pretend the head of a goose is your only target when they're close enough and you'll do fine.  When pass shooting use nothing smaller than 1s and I prefer BBBs.  You can kill them at reasonable ranges with 3" 12ga shells but I use a 3 1/2" 10ga.

Way too many people on this site and others put too much stock in shot and choke selections.  Learn to call and work waterfowl and you will have spent your time much more wisely than you would worrying about patterns and shot density.

what i was trying to say is that killing geese involves, in decreasing order of importance:

1) Being in the right spot
2) Knowing how to call
3) Knowing how to work geese
4) Knowing how to shoot (Accurately)
5-20) Knowing lots of other things
21) Shot type
22) Choke type

and yet there are always all these questions about choke tubes and shot sizes...  Go hang out in any public area in the midwest (Where I hunt) and 5-10% of the hunters know how to call.  Maybe 25% can shoot.

I prefer Hevi and have used a lot of it.  Hope it works for you and good luck on getting a goose.
