I was just looking at that post of the 50 BMG necked up to .70 cal. Not being a big bore fan and knowing little about them, I'm wondering when a big bore quit's being a big bore and become's an anti tank round?

I'd sure hate to lug a rifle chambered for a 50 BMG or 70 BMG around in the woods, wouldn't you?

Of course, I guess not all rifles are destined for the gamefields and some are shot for target, competition, or just plain fun.

The B.A.T.F. considers anything above .50 caliber as a Destructive Device, (aka an anti-tank round) unless it determines that it has a "legitimate sporting purpose."

Guess we better not let B.A.T.F. see what a steak knife does to a hamburger!

Better yet, what would they think if they saw what Rosie O'Neal does to a hamburger!

I don't see why a 70-50 BMG could not get classified for "legitimate sporting purposes".  RNS's 550 has, and the 600 Nitro and 700 Nitro are both classified that way.  After all, the old British Paradox guns were more or less 12 gauge, 10 gauge, etc. rifles...

Doesn't have to be a rifle used for hunting.

The old ones are grandfathered in, and the makers of the new ones have to apply for approval. That's all there is too it. And you are right Yukon Jack, "sporting purposes" does not mean just hunting. Now if we could just get the Democrats to understand that, they might even get a few seats back in congress.

Isn't the 700 Nitro a relatively new cartridge?  I don't remember the exact year of introduction, but seems like it was the late 1980's????

Just my 2 cents,
Many of us like the exotic stuff.  I certainly do, cars, boats as well as rifles.  I like talking and using the old smaller stuff as well as anyone, but sometimes the status quo gets real boring any many of us like crazy wild things like the custom big bores.  :D

Ramrod - I'm sorry buddy, but I don't think the dumbocrats will ever consider any firearm for sporting purposes, period, whether there is overwhelming evidence or not.  I think the only thing we can do is dress up the dissenters to look like hamburgers and invite rosie to a free buffet (lol).  Git 'r done.................  Mikey.
