I'd say they could cheapen it quite a bit even with the apeals. Do like Jim said & put a time limit on the apeals process. A year or 2 would seem like plenty. Sell all the fancy killing machines & just shoot them.
Could let the victims family or friends choose the shooter to save even more cash. Far as deterent I think it should be televised on natonal TV. Maybe a pay per view but the national news stations would probably be more effective.

What say you guys, a fancy chair that costs probly over $10,000, a leathal injection that probly costs about the same with all the acoutraments or a bullet that costs maybe a quater?

The death penalty isn't a punishment in my eyes... you aren't punishing the offender as much as you are removing him/her from our collective misery.  
I think that there shouldn't be any appeal unless the defense has something new to bring to the table.  Got some new evidence to prove  that your client is innocent?  No?  Too bad.  You gotta cut out some of the good meat to make sure you get all the tumor.  DNA evidence is pretty darned foolproof if you ask me.

If the legal system was also a true justice system I might see capitol punishment for young offenders differently. As it is now, there are too many murders committed by so called rehabilitated murderers. At least the death penalty stops them from killing again. We read almost daily of paroled killers killing again. It has to stop, fry them. POWDERMAN.  :x  :x  :x  :x  :x  :x
