Which cal. is recommended?
« on: March 02, 2005, 05:12:32 AM »
I am looking at getting an encore this summer.  I'm just saving up money for the right gun.  I will be hunting whitetailes in Wisconsin and am not sure of which cal. to choise.  My friend just bought a .243 and it shoots nice.  I am looking at a mid-range to small cal. for the recoil.  The ones that catch my eye are the .243, 6mm, and possible the 25-06.  I not looking for a tank to get the job done.  Thanks  Brian

given the choices you have, I would choose the 25-06. I love the 243 round but the 25-06 will do it with a little more authority.  :D

i have a 15" .243 and i like it.
 8)  but.........as far as i'm concerned the 15" 7-08 is the perfect whitetail gun. recoil with 120's is very tolerable and scoot along at 2800fps.

I was at Gander Mountain lastnight to ask more questions.  The guy there said that the 7mm-08, and the 308 were based on the same case but necked differently.  Those two cal. are very close to the 243.  Is he correct?  What will be the recoil of the 25-06, 7-08 and 308 when compaired to the 243?

The 243, 7-08 and 308 are all the same case just with different size necks to accomodate the different caliber bullets.  As you step up in caliber, recoil is going to increase depending on your loads.  Do you reload, and will this be your first handgun?

Brian,  My favorite is the 260Rem.  Like the .243 and 7-08 it is based on the .308 case.  It just seems to be something magical about those 6.5mm bullets.  But for purely deer hunting, I'd have to agree with KYODE, the 7-08 would be hard to beat.  If larger game is possible, maybe the .308.  GOOD SHOOTIN', Walt   :D

Go with the 7mm-08...I don't think that you will be disappointed.  Very tolerable recoil, versatile, and accurate.
How'd you like a peek at my 14-incher? (Contender, that is)
