straight walled cartridge
« on: March 03, 2005, 04:57:19 AM »
I'm beginning to think about a straight walled cartridge to hunt Whitetail deer in southern Michigan.  I'm purchasing the Encore pistol.

Looking at the .375 Winchester.

Also looking at the .444 Marlin but I don't know much about it other than is holds about double the powder of the 44 mag.  How severe is the  recoil and what is its maximum range?

I'd like something with a littler more than 100 yard range so the .44 mag is out.

Feel free to give anyother suggestions.

thanks

Check out the .454 Casull if you like to reload.  Very versatile, and with Barnes' new XPB solid copper 200gr. bullet, you could get past the 200 fps. barrier with a 12" barrel and turn it into a pretty fast pistol to say the least.  That being said, the Barnes bullet are $.90 a piece, and I prefer my 320 gr. or 355 gr. cast bullets in my .454 Casull 12" Encore barrel, the whitetails can't tell the difference!

I have a 444 contender and would have no problems out to 200yds. Loaded with aa2015 and 265gr Horn. SP velocity is just under 2000fps. In the encore, this could be easily surpassed. My barrel is magna-ported, so recoil is not a problem.  This barrel has become one of my favorites and is extremely accurate. With the wide range of bullets available, I think you would be hard pressed to find something better, IMHO.

a .357 max is a 100 yd plus round and is pretty easy to work with. About the same recoil as a .44 but better range and great bullet selection.

ill shoot 357 max then some mags the wife shoots 38's while im shooting 45's then ill go shoot 357 max's again an ther are geten tight to get in an out of the barrel but again were talken 300 400 rounds in a few hours

I'm a strong supporter of your first listing...the .375 Win.  Lays a wackin' on whitetails and other critters.  I load with the 220gr. flat nose Hornady's and they are deadly.  Also has enough power to get you beyond the 100 yard mark.  Not sure though, can you get a .375 Win. in an Encore (without special order/custom makers?)?
How'd you like a peek at my 14-incher? (Contender, that is)

The 375 winchester is a great round as are the other ones mentioned but my 375 win I had was a very accurate and hard hitting gun.

It depends on the regulations in southern Michigan. Why not get a 45-70? That is probably one of the most versatile rounds for the TC. You can hunt anything that Michigan offers and you'll be able to go beyond 100 yards with it as well.

I would vote for the 45-70 in a model with a break and a 4x scope, just like the one I have on my Contender. Good out to 150yds easy and more if you practice. I have taken deer with it from 25yds to 120yds and all were DRT (Dead right there).
I shoot the 300 grn Jacketed soft point and have some 400grn jacketed but I don't think I will ever need that much punch.

How about the JDJ .411 (444 Marlin case necked to .41). I was getting 2300fps with a 210gr. bullet out of a 14in. barrel.
Or the .41 GNR and GNR#2.
http://www.reedercustomguns.com/information/GNR_cartridges.htm
45/70 is also a great round. I had a 12in. hunter barrel and with factory ammo I could shoot a 1 1/2in. group at 100M.

Have you ever had a problem with the 357 Max cases failing?  TC advised me against shooting alot of shorter cases out of the Max chamber, said a ring would develop and the Max cases would fail at the ring area.
I've shot only a few 357 Mag and 38 Spec out of my Max because of their warning.

Michigan allows only straight-walled handgun cartridges of .35 caliber and greater.

"A conventional (smokeless powder) handgun must be .35 caliber or larger and loaded with straight-walled cartridges and may be single- or multiple-shot but cannot exceed a maximum capacity of nine rounds in the barrel and magazine combined."

In the area I would be hunting in southerm Michigan is mainly open farm land.  So I'm looking for a cartridge with a 150 -200 yard range.  Most of the postings for the 375 Winchester puts it out to around 150 yards.  Based on threads regarding the 454 Casull and a friends response regarding how his 454 abuses him I don't think I want that particular cartridge.  Don't know much about the 444 marlin so was looking into that cartridge or any other suggestions.

I think the main problem with straight walled cases is the shape of the bullet. If you could get a spitzer shaped bullet that would be great. If you have not seen the new S&W 460XVR revolver ... it is a .45 caliber and shoots a spitzer shaped 200gr. bullet at 2300fps. They say it is a 200 yard handgun.

That's dumb!  Does this mean that a .38 Special is legal to hunt deer with in Michigan!?!

DCB 1 has hit upon a decent idea...the new 460 S&W seems to be a heck of an idea.  Has some special rifling that starts slow and finishes fast.  They claim that recoil is not bad, and those .45 caliber balls are really cooking out of that thing.  I know that it might be a little off topic, since it is only available for the S&W XVR (a wheel gun)as of the present, but I imagine that in the near future, it will become a popular round for the Encore.

Iowa has the same stuped laws, although you can also use your straight-walled pistol during the late muzzle-loader season.

you can put a pointed(sort of) bullit in the .375win.. It's Speers 235gr. semi- pointed soft point. Based on my expansion work you probably won't like it though.  Pat
