need some help with a COLT
« on: March 03, 2005, 06:54:33 AM »
I have a buddy that recently found a pistol that his mother has had for a long time and he was wondering about getting some history on what kind of pistol it is.  He has 1 mag for this pistol and would like to get a couple more but doesn't know what kind of mag will fit.  Here is the info that was on the pistol.

D.G.F.M.-(F.M.A.P.)
EJERCITO ARGENTINO
SIST COLT Cal 11.25mm
Model 1927

I will try and get some pics to post.
Any info on this pistol would be greatly appreciated.

The Argentine Colts were manufactured in Argentina, begining in 1927, with Colt tools and dies. They are actually a good quality piece if you can find one on good condition. The 1927s imported into the US were used by Argentine military and police and many aren't in very good condition. The going price in 1994 for milsurp 1927s was $100 however they are worth considerably more now.

The 1927 Argentine is nearly identical to a US Military 1911A1. 11.25mm is known as a 45 ACP here at home. Any GI or aftermarket 1911 45 ACP magazine will work just fine. All parts are compatible with standard Colt 1911s.

Thanks Iowegan,
This is just the info my buddy was looking for.  This got me thinking about a Colt 1911 that my dads step father gave him.  I was doing some research on it last night and I believe it was made in 1924 (according to the serial #).  The # was tough to read because this pistol was chromed.  The pistol looks like the 1924 models except in all the research I have done I have not seen one chromed and with the gold plated accents like this pistol.  I am going to get some digital pics and post on a seperate post to see if anybody has seen one like this.  I wonder if this was presented to someone special.  I don't believe it was carried in the field (to flashy).

Thanks,

tbull55, Don't confuse the Colt serial numbers with the Argentine serial numbers. They are totally different dates of manufacture, though the Argentine numbers could be in the same number range as a Colt. Your gun wasn't even made in 1924 (not till 1927).

Likely the gun was nickle plated not chromed. This was a popular thing to do with the Argentine guns because the factory finish was pretty bad. Sounds like you have a good specimen. They really don't have much collector value so don't be afraid to shoot it.

tbull - that's just like one of my 45s.  The slide on mine reads the same as that on your 45.  I have owned mine for almost 40 years and have shot it quite a bit.  Lent it to a fella who used it for MP duty and pistol matches.  Stuffed it full of heavy springs and she still shoots like a charm.  Uses any 1911 magazine.  Those grips however, are kinda clunky and you can switch them for any 1911 grips.  HTH.  Mikey.

Iowegan,
The colt my father has is not the Argentine 1911 I was asking about.  My buddy discovered the argentine 1911 at his moms house.  My father got his colt 1911 from his step father.  I have learned from my father that he remembers that his step father did have the chrome/nickeling and gold accents done a long time ago.  The serial # I did the research on is from the colt 1911 my father has.  I took some pics of my fathers 1911, as soon as I learn how to post them, I will put them up!

Ahhh, got confused there. Your 1924 vintage Colt is getting worth some bucks. Any gun with the little horse will increase in value, especially the "gangster era" 1911s.
