.22 Hornet Questions - Coyote Hunting
« on: March 03, 2005, 08:00:47 AM »
I'm thinking of getting a .22 hornet rifle for close range coyote hunting.  Most of my shots will be 75 yards or less.

1. How much does factory ammo cost?  How many rounds come in a box?  Are factory rounds generally accurate in this caliber?

2. How loud is a .22 hornet?  I prefer not to scare the farmers too bad.

3. Anybody have a NEF Handi-Rifle in .22 hornet?  The super-lite model?

4. What is the range of this round?  I'd rather NOT have something that has the range of a .223.

Thanks,

TNred

TNred,

I use a hornet when calling in country that is brushy and the shots arn't going to be long distance. I find the little hornet to be very effective if the shots are close range. Some of the country here where i do my calling the shots are some times fairly long range. I use a lot of James Calhoon bullets with great success, Also use them in my 22 center fire rifles as well. As far as the cost of factory ammo. I don't have a clue, Haven't bought a factory box of ammo in years. As far as the noise the hornet is by far the quietest of the 22s.. The problem with factory loads is they will ricochet unless you can get some thing like the v-max or any of the fast expanding bullets. Hope this helps, Good luck.........Joe.........

The cost usually runs around $25.00 for a box of 50, in the gun shops around here!

The "dangerous" range of the hornet is miles, remember, the 22LR is 1 1/2 miles!

Effective range is out to "maybe" 200 yards!  Really good out to 150 yards!

TNred,

Both the wife and I use .22 Hornets for calling rifles.  Deadly on coyotes out ot 150 - 175 yards.  Report is louder than a .22lr or .22 mag. but not enought to "scare the farmers".  You can get factory ammo for as little as $11.89 for 25 for Hornady ammo from Midway.  Go to http://www.midwayusa.com/ebrowse.exe/browse?TabID=3&Categoryid=7515&categorystring=653***690*** and check out all they have for the Hornet.  I reload myself and you would be shocked as to how long a pound of powder will last reloading the Hornet.  The .22 Hornet is the most pelt friendly cartridge I own for taking varmints.  Lawdog

Me, and Lawdog definately agree on the Hornet. Like him, I use mine a lot on calling stands, and quite frankly, it's extremely hard to beat for just about every calling situation.

Get one, and you won't be sorry.

By the way, the NEF Hornets are fine little rifles.

Guys,

Thanks for the replies.  I'm gonna start with a Handi-Rifle Superlight in .22 hornet for a close-range carry gun (open sights).

I just love using the Hornet when I am calling in areas where I know that I may call in a fox as well as a coyote. the Hornet will not damage the hide on a fox like some of the center fire 22. I have not made a shot past 150 yrs with my Hornet I would not be afraid to take a shot out to 200 yards if I had to.
I have a older Hornet in the Nef I bought it from a friend a few years ago. It is the reason I have added a few more of the Nef Line up to the very back of the gun safe(hoping the wife fails to notice them)  :-D

I think you`ll be pleased with the Hornet. I killed alot of groundhog and squirrels with one of them years ago. My main carry gun for the last 4 years has been a .17AH. It`s better than the .22 Hronet in every respect, but unless you reload and have plaied with wildcats befor it is not a good choice to learn with as presure jumps so fast with it. With some of the new 30 and 35 grn. bullets they have not the Hornet should reach out considerablely farther than it did when I was shooting one, and the H&R - NEF`s are great little carry guns. They shot good, their cheap and they are so ugly that you don`t cry when you put the first scrach on them.

i shoot a k-hornet in a 21in. contender barrel,i use the 35gr. v-maxes, and they are very accurate, and explosive, out to 200yds. not real loud, i guess? not at all like my 22-250AI.
i have only used hand load,s for mine. but iv,e seen hornady 35grainers in factory ammo, that said 3100fps. mine do just under 3200.  they shoot real flat! i have shot a bunch of groundhogs with mine, the longest being 230yds. i was shocked to connect on that one!
dont get too picky about match grade accuracy, mine shoots about three quarters of an inch at 100 yards, thats 1.5 inches at 200.(give or take)  if i do my part, i own anything inside 200yds.
i also have guns that i shoot in matches that will avarage quarter inch groups.(diffrent ball game!)
i have heard of bad accuracy from other,s, but always from a hornet chamber, not (k-hornet) like mine.
the 22-hornet will kill fox, and coyote,s but on the coyote,s, pick your shots! it,s able, but has no power to spare! so if you shoot the factory stuff at game. pay a little more for modern bullets.
  good luck.
