What Bait?
« on: March 03, 2005, 08:58:40 AM »
I was thinking about trying to bait some bears this year and was wondering what works best. I was told that molasses works really good and I was just wondering if you guys had luck with anything!

Thanks

About where in Canada are you planning to bait? Black Bears, right? Molasses almost always works, so does sugary things, fresh fruit, food grade oil (used), bread, anise oil for sent, meat scraps (cooked or fresh, but not rotten), and so forth. A lot depends on what the State allows you to use, or prohibits. And, what you can find/afford. There's several previous threads on this board that talk to " baiting", both in what to use, and how to do it. 8)

My 2 cents worth...
I've never had honey fail me at a bait site. I've used it most effectively as a "positioning bait" to supplement the other offerings in the bait pile. Place a little bit o' honey in a location where the bear will have to expose his vitals to reach it. Bears simply can not resist sampling honey when available!

I don't know what provence you live in, but if you live in BC you can probably get your hands on a five gallon bucket, or two, of rasberrys and juice, a friend of mine in Washington state had great success with it until bait was banned.  You can get it at fruit cannerys in season.  Just hang it from a tree and drill some small holes in the bucket.

in wisconsin you cant use meat based anything.  what im using and having good luck with soi far is...:

liquid smoke and anise oil for scent.

i am buying cookies (appears to be chips ahoy..lol) by the 55 gallon drum for 9 cents/pound

i also geta mix of crushed cerals (sugary kinds) and waffle cones.with gummy bears mixed in (there has been speculation on canabalism if a bear eats a gunny bear...lol..ok bad joke)

i get apple pie filling by the barrel for abot 10-11 cents /pound (this has been a must)

and top it with orange marmalade (by that by the 5 gallon buckets for 4 bucks)

do not over pay for bait.

oh yeah..i get fryer grease for free from just about every cafe in town.  the more used the better and i use about 20 gallons per month between three bait sites.
