exploding bullets
« on: March 03, 2005, 11:52:57 AM »
I know its not a good idea but i read in one of my books about exploding bullets. it said that in a 45-70 you could bore out a hole the size of a percusin cap like that goes on a muzzaloder and fill the hole part way with black powder and put in the percusin cap and seal with wax they say when you shoot it the bullet explodes on contact. any one else herd of this? i just thout it was intiresting.

Since you asked I'll respond. Better than I've seen it but using spell check would improve it more. Check the words in blue.

As to your initial comment I believe such bullets are currently in violation of federal law. However I don't honestly think it will work anyway. I tried a similar experiment in my youth and never was able to make one explode no matter what I shot the bullet into. It is surprisingly hard to make a primer pop except with a firing pin. Using a percussion cap as you mention might make a difference as I used standard primers.

TrapperZach, as to the 'exploding bullets' question: it has been done before in the past, but does not work well. The idea was to get enough of a charge into the bullet to cause it to come apart upon impact with a target. I would not recommend trying it because I am sure it is illegal.

As to your spelling: I would recommend typing your posts into Microsoft Word and using the spell check. Then just copy it out of Microsoft Word and paste it into the post on here. That should help you out.

Ok, but if you DO decide to try it, make sure to get it on video.  Your surviving family can sell it to America's Dumbest Idiots TV show and make some money.

Zach, if you want your bullet to explode use Hornady v-max varmint type bullets.  they "explode" when they hit something due to the thinly constructed jacket material and plastic tip.  The tip gets driven into the bullet and the high spin rate combined with the thin jacket causes it to come apart violently.  Perfectly legal.  Not really an explosion, just rapid expansion.  Same effect though.

Another thing to think about Zach is the new Patriot Act. You may never know who is out there lurking about in cyberland. Talk like that could elicet a visit from the BATFE. :D

I was up at Utah Lake the other day and some guys werre shooting at dynamite or something. Every now and then they would shoot at something and something down range would explode, like black powder exploding or something. I was going to go over and ask them what they were shooting at but before I did the were gone. Looked like fun though.
Ohhhh, I hate when that happens

Maybe they blew themselves up?

I use to live there.  I heard of folks shooting at the lake.  Do you have to drive to the far side over by "The Bowl", or is it close to town?  I used to shoot at the Spanish Fork gravel pits all the time.  Can shoot to 300 yards if you set it up right.  Also, there's some areas up Spanish Fork Canyon too.  I hate ranges.

Back in the 1800's a lot of things were tried in order to increase bullet performance.  The big heavy bullets used in the Sharps et al did a good job but wouldn't expand at the below 1600 fps most of them achieved.  For a while it was popular to drill a hole in the big 45-and-over caliber bullets and stick either a 22 blank or a 22 short minus the bullet into the hole and try and get increased expansion thataway.  Didn't work too well then, and don't see why it would work well now.  Only time the 22 would go off is if bone was hit, and not always then, so the idea passed away into well deserved oblivion; at least as far as civilian sporting rounds went.  Durned big ol' bullets didn't need to expand anyway, but people will do the craziest things........... the ol "what if" syndrome.

Stiff neck, I shoot just past Pelican Point  if you're coming from Lehi on the west side. You have to go out past what's now Saratoga Springs. You wouldn't believe the development now.

Zach- I for one don't mind your spelling. I am proud of you for asking the questions you do. If we can give you answers that might keep you safe instead of giving you crap and have you quit posting... well I would hate to read about you in the paper for trying something you "heard about".
You did ask about the spelling but I think it is just important that you keep asking.
 STAY SAFE, Brent

It's always better to ask questions I'm 40 and still ask questions especially
about shooting and handloading and don't try something dangerous
because someone said, or saw it done.

Zach, I'm new here but you made me remember when I was your age, alot of guys did crazy things just so they would look cool .(or so they thought).  You must be given credit for asking before trying a crazy thing like this and please always ask an adult ( someone who's been around the block a few times) before doing anything that in your mind is questionable. This doesn't pertain only to firearms but alot of other things that will come your way as you get older. I have over the years heard stories of some of the "cool" guys from my youth and there are a few of them residing at the greybar motel because they never learned to use there better judgement. Something you have allready shown by posting this question.

That's the type if bullet that John Hinkley used to shoot president Reagan.  My view if they had worked they would have exploded on his clothing and made a large superficial wound, they would not have penetrated.  Some company made them back then and advertised them for shooting rats and snakes.  After the President got shot with them that was the end of them.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.
