revolvers and ballistic tips ?
« on: March 04, 2005, 08:55:21 AM »
I want a load that incorporates a ballistic tip projectile in .44 special/mag or the 500 smith. where can I find projectiles with a cannelure already pressed into the bullet or is there a tool that I can accomplish this with.Any ideas would be appreciated also any warnings would also be heeded. None the less I think it is subject worth discussing.

C&H made a canneluring tool, don't know if it is still available.  The biggest problem is simply finding suitable bullets...who even makes them?  Are they suited for the low velocities of a revolver - will they even expand?  Will the longer BTip bullets be stabilized in the revolver's slow twist rate?  Are they too long to fit in the cylinder when loaded out?  Will they take up too much powder space if seated deeply enough to fit the cylinder?  The difference in ballistics out of a revolver will not be too much, it may be best to stick with more traditional revolver projectiles....or not!    :D

How will the cylinder rotate with an 1/8" sticking out the end? No revolver will handle rifle bullets due to this, unless you shoot extra short 44 cases.

besides the other problems mentioned,  i guess i want to know where you think you re going to find .429 cal ballistic tips (unless i am missing something).
my other thought concerns the overall practicality of what you are suggesting.  a revolver is a revolver, and works on different sets of principles; just as a rifle does.   i just dont see what using rifle design bullets in a revolver is going to gain you.
theonly  exceptions i can think of might be a 22 hornet  "raging hornet" by taurus. even then you might well run into problems with cylinder length vrs. cartridge o.a.l.

I'm not sure you'd get enough velocity out of a handgun round to make a ballistic tip worthwhile. I think they're the greatest thing since sliced bread in my .223 & .30-06, but those are 3,000fps+ rifles with a range that's considerably longer than any revolver. If you want to shoot ballistic tips out of a handgun, maybe check out a single-shot like the T/C Contender in a rifle caliber?

ok .44 mag not at all practical, now how about the 500 smith seems like I have a lot of room in the cylinder and plenty of case length to play with. Any thoughts on that caliber and ballistic tips?

Didn't I see a ballistic tipped bullet for the new S&W 460 Magnum?  At least in the recent gun rags.  I thought I saw a red tip on the end of the bullet.

the caliber and gun are answers for the unasked question.   to me,  nothing more than a marketing gimmick.    large bore guns use big, heavy projectiles to kill.   to me, it's like they introduced a 270 that shoots a 320 grain bullet @ 900fps- whats the point?

yes you did see a ballistic tip in the .460 smith your eyes did not deceive you. I was hoping to duplicate the very same thing in the 500. Seems like a 275/300 grain ballistic tip out of the 500 should do bad things to the local ground hog population. I know what the .17 hmr will do to them and was hoping to get it done with the 500. Can you imagine the mess ????? OH Boy! ! I might have to wait until my father gets the .460 but making ammo for the 500 will be easier than prying his new toy out of his hands!!
