What kind of accuracy ?

Hi

What kind of 100 yd accuracy are you guys getting out of your Huntsman and what loads are you getting them with? Can the average guy tune them or do you have to be a gunsmith? Anyone shot Black Mag 3 out of their Huntsman? This will be my first ML.

Hi, welcome aboard. You will discover the Huntsman is a very accurate muzzle loader. I use two 50 grain pellets of pryodex and a 250 grain T/C shockwave bullet. I can get a one inch group at 100 yards. I was using the same two 50 grain pyrodex pellet load and a 240 grain XTP bullet and a mag sabot from T/C with about the same result. The 240 grain XTP bullet is devastating on mule deer. I am planning an antelope hunt this fall and I will be using the 250 grain Shock wave bullet if I draw in Wyoming. I will have a 3x9 Bushnell scope mounted on the Huntsman for the antelope hunt and a red dot BSA for the mule deer hunt.  I suggest you clean your muzzle loader between every third shot and have the breech plug finger tight and greased with a good quality grease. When you leave the range make sure you loosen the breech plug. :D

Huntsman Accuracy

Hey Rick,
       I have a Huntsman with a 1.5x6 Redfield Widefield Scope mounted on it.  I shoot Hornady 240 gr XTP's with Pyrodex P powder and 777 ffg powder.  I also shoot No Excuse Conicals 460 gr with the same powders.  At 100 yards I can average around 1.5" groups with both combinations.  The Huntsman is a great rifle for the price and seems to be able to shoot Sabots and Conicals equally well.  I have never used Black Mag 3, no one in this area carries it.  Closest place is Cabelas in PA.  Enjoy your Huntsman.

I guess you and Jerry are the only ones getting any kind of accuracy out of your huntsman ML. It does not look good for the HUntsman. Too bad.

:?  :?: , What??? I thought many here were getting GREAT accuracy from their Huntsmans and have been posting about it for over a year...

I am at a loss about what the below post means or where in the heck it came from, just "sour grapes" perhaps???

It sure doesn't make much sense or go along with the posted results of Huntsman owners. As a matter of fact, it seems to be just the opposite of the truth. Perhaps Ricoh is just pulling our collective legs....<><.... :roll:

You're right MSP, I was just pulling your leg. Everything I have read here and on any other forums have had nothing but praise for the Huntsman. It seems that it will shoot just about any powder and any bullet with decent accuracy. I just wanted to see if anyone has come up with anything new. This forum seems to have gone somewhat dormant and I was just hoping to revive it a little. I don't have an ML yet but am pretty sold on the Huntsman. Availability of powders and projectiles is very limited in my area and most of my supplies will have to be shipped in, gun included. All they carry here is TC, Savage and Traditions. Ml is just starting to take off up here so I hope things get better. I do have another question . Has anyone gone to an after market stock and forearm or does the Ultra Rifle laminated stock fit the huntsman? I like the look of the Ultra.

Yes Ricoh, ther Ultra Laminated and all H&R/NEF buttstocks bolt right onto the Huntsmans (and Sidekicks also) but the forearms are different because of the loading rod (ram rod)....<><.... :grin:

I was thinking about the aftermarket stock and then quickly realized that I would be paying more for the stock than I did for the Sidekick... hmmm.  I pulled out an old Mauser rifle stock that I have laying around and my chop and adapt it to the Sidekick.  Seems like I should try to keep things cheep, given the platform I'm working off of.

I use BM3 in my Huntsman and if you ever try it you are going to like it alot.  Not much fouling in the barrel after the shot.  I have a Simmons 2X7 on mine and only line it up at 50 yards to shoot 1 1/2" high.  With 80 grains of BM3 and a T/C 240 grain sabot I can usually get three shots either touching or pretty darn close.   The T/C 240 grain sabot does real well on deer.

I think the Ultra stock will look great, glad it fits and I understand that they have a laminated forearm for the huntsman barrel. Perfect. I have been trying to find out more about BM3 but not a lot of people trying it. I think it's hard to get. I am going to talk to my gun shop guy and get him to look into getting some. I don't know if I can import it myself with our wonderful gun laws up here but I sure would like to give it a try. Does anybody think the 26'' barrel will make a difference in the loads and velocity?

Ricoh, I can't see the 26" barrel being and better than the 24" barrel at BP velocities. I think I would prefer the 24" for ease of handling in the thick woods I usually hunt....<><.... :grin:

Hi MSP

I understand that all new Huntsman and sidekicks are going to have 26'' barrels now. I am a treestand hunter so it really does not matter to me but I was just thinking that the 2 extra inches would increase velocity a bit which is OK.

On the Modern Muzzleloading Rifle and Shotgun forum there is a whole thread about the Black Mag 3 powder which you might find helpful.  The powder is rather hard to get as not many places carry it yet and it is more expensive than Pyrodex and 777 but IMO it's worth the extra.

I WAS LOADING A 215 GR, RN,LEAD BULLET WIYH 80 GR. LOOSE RS POWDER JUST TO GET AWAY FROM HIGHER COST JACKET BULLETS IT SHOT SO GOOD......I TRIED 90 GR. IT GOT BETTER...100 GR. NO PROBLEM.....DIDNT HAVE ANY PLACE TO SHOT ANY GREAT DISDANCE YET.......BUT SOON......I CANT FIND ANYTHING,< BUT THE LEE TARGET BULLET >..THE HUNTSMAN DONT LIKE...IT WILL SHOT THE LEE OK BUT NOT OVER 80 GR OF POWDER.....JB

Ricoh,

I'm another BM3 fan, amazing stuff if you can find it.  Very clean, very little residue.  I shot 8 shots last week in a row without swabbing just to see if I could.  No problem, breech plug came out easy.

Morning boys

I just got in from plowing another foot of snow out of my friggen laneway. I am really getting tired of this. Anyway thanks for all the info. It sounds like this gun just plain shoots. I was thinking about going smokeless but I am not going to now. I really hope I can get some BM3 but if not everything seems to shoot out of this gun so no big deal. I am going to order my gun tomorrow.
