I found this nice piece of steel at the scrap yard, and was thinking of building something out of it. I was thinking about trying to have one end threaded on the inside and have a threaded plug made for it. Any suggestions?

What (if anything) do you plan to use as projectiles? (Red Bull cans filled with concrete would fit.) What would you like it to look like? If you have to pay someone to do the work, you might be better off buying a commercially made gun.

It's an addiction. Just about everything that I pick up any more I am thinking "what caliber?"

It is a candidate for sure. As mentioned the question is cost. I had a 5" diameter by 22" long piece of 4140 bored to just under 3" for $220 at a local shop. Added the trunion myself and built a laminated pine base. Not pretty, just muscle - shoots 24oz soda pop bottles farther than I care to shoot.

Find a friend who has a lathe or better yet is a machinist. He would probably be willing to help you out as long as you let him shoot it. It probably wouldnÂ’t be long before he built his own.

Cultivate a friendship with an instructor at a local vocational school or high school. Most machinist instructors are always up for a new project and are willing to help others. You might be able to arrange use of the equipment after hours. They may even have some night machinist courses you could take. For a few hundred dollars you could build the cannon your self and gain some experience doing it.

Just a few ideas. There is definitely some potential there.

I'm sitting here reading this stuff to my wife and her comment was simply, "You guys are nuts!" I've learned over the years she's a good judge of character; and I agree - we are nuts. But it's fun.
