44 Mag Accuracy out of a 10 inch barrel
« on: March 05, 2005, 01:50:01 AM »
What type of accuracy can I expect out of a 44 Mag Encore 10 inch barrel?  What type of scope are you using?

I am putting together a Bambi-Blaster in celebration of Disney's re-release of the Bambi cartoon.......

Seriously,  I intend to scope this barrel for deer hunting as well as some target  work.  What can I expect from this barrel?

Thank you,

I am getting 1 inch groups at 50 yards with mine, but it is a Contender. It is a 10 inch barrel with a Leupold 4X EER scope.  :D

My 12 inch Encore is showing promise to be a 1 inch shooter at 100 yards off the rest with a 2-6 Bushnell Elite 3200 scope.  It's happened a couple of times but usually I flinch or yank the trigger.  I have notice that smooth trigger pull helps a whole bunch (as with all guns and bows).

my 10 inch encore 44 barrel with a bushnell red dot will do1" to 1 1/2 at 50 with a 240 grn xtp over 22.5 grns of 2400.these are very hot loads 1440 fps at the muzzle.i have not had a chance to put them to use on game but shooting it much will draw blood on me.after about 20 rounds the darn frame will cut through the skin on my index finger.guess i gotta invest in some shooting gloves.
i loaded some plinker loads with a bunch of 240 grn cast gas checked hollow points i had.stinkin thing seems to shoot them just as well,i loaded them with 6 grns of bullseye.these are shot resting on the porch rail, probably do better using an actual pistol rest.good luck with it.

I have a 12" barrel mounted to a G2 and get 2 to 2.5" groups out to 100 yards.  I have a 2x Leupold scope mounted.  I love this combination and it is one of my deer hunting rigs.

I fell in love with my Contender 10" 44 w/ choke.  It has about 8.5? inches of rifling.  At 100yds with open sights I can average 5"  depending on the ammo.  I have gotten some 3" 3 shot groups.   I never thought I could shoot open sights until I got this one.  At 50 yds it will cluster the size of a baseball all day long with most of the shots touching (a few flyers in the grouping).

If it had a scope I think it would do a lot better.

When using a 2X scope at 100 yards I found that I can shrink my groups by using a home made target instead of the regular bull or triangle. I spray paint a black 4X4" square on white paper and use the corners to line up my cross hairs on. Each corner point is used as a bull. It get's you back on the same place and is easier to see with the 2X Leupold.

The other day at the range I just hung up a white piece of typing paper and shot for the middle of it.  Hit very close and then aimed at my first bullet hole for the next two shots.  Best group I have ever had.

And one more thought . . .

Old archery trick is to make a cross using electricians tape and shoot for the middle of the cross.  And before making the cross, just a vertical line and shoot for it to see if you are shooting left or right.  Then make a only a horizontal line and shoot for it to verify elevation.  Finally, make the cross and shoot for the middle and see what happens.

One roll of black electrical tape and a 500 pack of cheap typing paper is pretty cheap and effective for targets if a guy wants to try it.

Wow Im looking foward to getting out with the gun.  It sounds like it could be a winner.  Ive got to load some rounds for it, then get to the range.

Im thinking of trying the 2400 with XTP 180's,  anyone shoot the cheaper Remingtons or other brand?  Hows the results?

For range work I have found the factory loaded PMC's that they call truncated soft points to shoot very, very well.  Not sure it would be a great hunting round but have wondered if it would for certain game.  They are not as expensive as some other factory loads.

My 14" .44mag contender is capable of 1" accuracy at 50yds.  My favorite hunting bullet is a 265 gr flat point.  It shoots the 240gr XTPs just as well.
I used to ahve a 4x scope on it. I switched to a red dot scope a couple of years ago and really llike it. Especially in heavy cover when you have to get on a deer quickly.

I've got a 10" contender barrel.  Had it crowned and a three ring mount put on by EABCO.  It shot okay before but now can get 1.5" out of 180g XTP's.  Those bullets are also moving 1,850 fps.  I use a Leupold 2x.  That makes this a great 100 yard bambi buster.

Mine will shoot less than an inch at 50 yards with a 2x scope and 240 gr. XTP's.  I had it on E-bay once and came to my  senses and pulled it before it sold.  What was I thinking, you should not sell a barrel that shoots that good and is not made any more.
