Ser. # Question
« on: March 05, 2005, 06:36:21 AM »
My recently purchased 657 Classic Hunter II has a Ser. # CDE49xx 657-4.  Does that give me any information at all about the firearm?  This is my first S&W.  Love that .41!

You have a great 41 mag.  I have 657 PC hunter and a 57 in nickle Pinned and recesses.  I hope to someday get an old blue 4 inch.

Your CDE prefix serial number makes it a 1999.

The -4 prefix was started in 1998.  The change was a frame design to eliminate the cylinder stop stud, eliminate serrated tangs, change to MIM hammer with floating firing pin, change to MIM trigger, change internal lock works.

Do you reload?

Yup, I reload.  Another reason to love reloading--you can get the best from a .41.  I use a lot of Alliant 2400 because it is so versitile and I have eighteen hungry T/C mouths to feed.  Would love to hear some of your favorite recipes.  Looking for good loads all the time, although I can't say I've foundany bad ones in the 657.  Seems like quite a handgun!

Mayor,

My fav. hunting load is using a hardcast 255 gr WFNGC (wide flat nose gas checked) over 19 gr pf W296.  I use CCI350 mag primers.  I dropped a doe at 85 yds last season, it never took a step.

My 657 wears a 4x Leupold.

HappyHunter.

Where do you find serial number/mfg dates for Smiths?  I have several Smiths but can't find mfg dates for them anywhere.

Thanks.

winman,

The "Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson"  by Jim Supica and Richard Nahas.  This is considered the Smith/Wesson Bible for many including myself.

This book is with me when I go to a gun show, or on gun store tours.  I can not recommend this book enough.
