.45 Vaquero ?
« on: March 05, 2005, 04:25:12 PM »
Here is my Delima:
I want a Vaqureo old style. I found a used SS 5.5" .45 Colt, it look's new.
The guy at the shop said the it had less than a box of shells true it, it is still dirty, other than that I see no flaws. Price is $475.00 out the door.
New is $592.00 out the door for old style.
Is there any thing I should check, I would like to start in CAS, is this a good Caliber or should I go .357 for CAS.
If I go .45 Colt, can I load this thing hot for Pig Hunting.
I need to make adissision Quick.

I love Vaqueros (old style) and the .45 colt caliber. It sounds like a pretty good deal to me. I have the same in case-hardened but stainless is something I have thought about lately.

Yes, you can certainly load her up heavy for pigs. I have shot a Russian boar with a .45 colt Marlin but a .45 colt handgun (my Vaquero or my new SBH Hunter) will be my weapon of choice on my next trip.

If your wife is saying buy it, what are you waiting for?

For CAS you need two handguns preferably same caliber, one shotgun and a rifle. If serious about winning most want lighter recoil than the .45. If you just wanna play and especially if you intend to use black powder and make smoke get the .45.

Now the vaquaro isn't the best choice for hunting. Yeah it might do fine with heavier loads but where will the point of impact be? No adjustable sights means you're stuck with it where ever it might hit.

I think you really need to decide what it is you're wanting to do and get the appropriate hardware to do it. This compromising trying to make it work for all jobs really ends up with something proper for none of them.

I have the old style 4-5/8ths Vaq SS in .45 Colt.  Great for wandering the woods in my crossdraw rig, plenty adequate for personal defense in camp or home, fantastic big bore plinker - I said: plinker, not silouette gun), easy to re-load caliber with lots of options.  But - it is no Smith & Wesson Model 25 (.45 Colt) in terms of quality or accuracy - the former because it is simply not as refined and the latter because it is a single action, fixed sight gun.  However, it is my favorite big bore handgun because it's so much fun and I can't explain that.  I agree with Graybeard - you should hunt boar with a gun that has large, adjustable sights.

I here Ya' GrayBeard:
My other gun is a .44 SBH Bisley, So I already have a Pig Gun.
I can't afford all the guns for CAS right now.
So I guess that takes care of two of my concern's.
So I guess what I'm looking at is a Play gun, I just want a Vaquero.
How about a .357 Mag., Is this a good Caliber for CAS, as maybe later I could get another one and slowly work up to getting myself into CAS.
My Wife has a .38 so we could share ammo.
I found new ones for $520.00 out the door, is this good.

I dont know what all the fuss is about vaqueros as hunting guns. Ive taken everything from squirels to buffalo with them. If you reload and have some patientes its easy to get  3 or 4 loads at different power levels to shoot to point of aim. Getting point of aim is a matter of a couple minutes with a file on the front sight and a little turn of the barrel if its even nessisary and if thats a problem Clements will fit a real nice drift adju sight on it for about a hundred bucks. To me the sight picture is just as good on one as it is on an adj gun unless you have a stainless one. My stainless vaqueros all get a blued clements sight as i cant see a stainless blade in the daytime. To me the little inconvience in getting them sighted is half the fun and the lines of them are so much better looking then the blocky adj sighted guns that its well worth the work and honestly how many people shoot more then two different loads out of the same gun anyway. Once you find a load that shoots good in a gun its usually the load you stick with anyway. At least thats the way it is for me. In my opinon if anything there the ideal hunting gun. There rugged and you dont have to worry about knocking yours sights out of adj. I cant think of a better whitetail or blackbear gun then a vaquero or bisley vaquero in 45 or 44 with a 4 5/8s barrel. Compact light accurate and reliable.

Holy cow!  That's just a bit overpriced.  A new one should be less than that used one.  There's no way I can reccommend you buy either at those prices.
Try this, go onto Davidson's website www.davidsonsinc.com .  Highlight "gun locator, and click on "start locator"  go through the criteria to find just what model you want.  Click on that model and above the picture click on "continue" input your zipcode and voila, three local dealers with thier prices.  I did it for here and all three were below $450 for the ss 51/2" 45LC model.   The dealer you're using now is overcharging quite I bit.

the old ones if you can call them that yet as they were just discontiuned are on the large frame same as the super blackhawk and blackhawk. the new ones are on the new smaller frame that is the same size as the old model 3 screw .357s. The old ones are very strong guns and the new ones are comparable to a colt sa or possibly a little stronger.

I don't have anything to compare with. When did the "new" style come out? I have had mine a couple of years. They are unfired, one is a birds head. Maybe I have a couple of gems?

The "new vaqueros" are new for this year.  There way to many of the older vaqueros to have any collector significance to them (a few models are an exception)  Incidentally, Davidson's just received a very large (1000+) number of the older style Vaqueros.  Proberly just Ruger using up some parts.

While still high in most places (sorry you're in KA) that $508 is still better than the first prices you had.  try a few different zip codes that would still be within a reasonable drive to you in the Davidson's gun finder.

$481.68 Out the door. Thanks
The sale ends tomorrow and I really don't like giving personal info. over the net. Do you know if I have to deal over the net to get the Davidson deal or can I go the shop that sell for davidson ?

Glad you found a better price.  Pays to look around.   The shops don't exactly sell for davidson's.  Davidson's is just a distributor of firarms and sells to any holder of a valid FFL.   Contact the dealer if you can and see if there's any chance for a better price or to just have it ordered for you before the sale ends.

Man those prices make me cringe. I just picked up a used stainless for $350.00-378.00 out the door.  I had a new model vaq on order for 400.00 last week, that was until they told me it would be a few weeks.  Then of course I tried some and they didn't exactly win me over, so I went with the old model for 350.00.  I'm sure the new ones will all be great in time, but as for now, they seem a little hit or miss. good luck

Nice!  Guess I'f I'd known you had interest in the extra cylinder, I have mentioned that runs of these 45 convertable vaqueros were indeed made for a few distributors.  Camfour may still have some in the blue/cch finish.  Anyways...it's not just finding a cylinder, but finding one that will actually work safely in your gun.  They're fitted to ensure proper timing.

Hey Hylander,

If you have any Sportsman's Warehouse around where you are I would try them.  They have the best prices on handguns and rifles, shotguns I have seen here in the Dallas area.  I bought a SBH .44 Bisley for $479 a month ago and have been looking at a SBH .41 (I think 6 1/2 barrel) longer barrel anyway for $329.  Seems like the Vagueros were in the $300 range, but not sure.  They also have the best selection and keep them in inventory so you don't have to wait.

The only .41 Super Blackhawk is the stainless .41 Hunter model made as an "exclusive" for Davidson's.  Has the typical 7 1/2" Hunter style bbl with the inegral scope mounts.  Available in both the standard Hunter grip and Bisley style.  All other .41's are actually blued Blackhawks and are only available in 4 5/8" and 6 1/2" bbls.

I have a consecutive pair of stainless BH Vaquero in 45LC, and they were just under 400 apiece. Good luck! DM
