scouting for next year
« on: March 05, 2005, 04:58:55 PM »
I'm gonna load up the canoe in the morning and go scout some creeks for next trapping season. I want to find as many otter toilets as I can and catolog them . I'll take my tile spade and alter a few trails to get the otter used to using them . Anybody else use this time of year to scout for next years lines? Tony

My season is still going and I'm already scouting for next year.

Scouted a nice creek today. Downstream from the landing, the creek runs for 2 miles  and sign was everywhere. Coon trails looked like pig paths  and every couple of bends in the creek, there were otter toilets. I also found 2 active beaver lodges.  I paddled back upstream and under the bridge and the sign got even better. More trails, more otter toilets and a small dam, hemming off the upper part of this swamp into one giant beaver flow. There was water pouring through a break in the middle of the dam as well as finding it's way around the sides and the sound was almost deafining. I didn't have time to pullmy canoe over the dam and investigate the beaver flow today, but Ill be back and see what else is up there. Tony 8)
