Looking for Crossbow Advice
« on: March 05, 2005, 05:34:34 PM »
I am a long time bowhunter using both traditional and compound models. I have never considered a crossbow because we only had a short season in Dec. to use one. But yesterday our F&W commission voted to allow xbows during the entire archery deer season. That got me to thinking I'm getting older and I want one. Could some of you tell me what a decent xbow would be and what I can expect from it (range, noise, setup etc)? As I said this is totally new to me, I have not even read about hunting with xbow. I know the top of the line models are pretty pricey but are there others that will do the job. I'm a tightwad (hunt with H&R\NEF and love them) if that tells you anything

The best hunting xbow I have used is the Excalibuer, a recurve bow and one of the most accurate bows I have owned. Other than the length of the rail, All Excalibur xbows are built the same. All have the same trigger, a 3lb pull, ease of maintenance, break a string and you can replace it in 2 minutes and not have to sight in again. With a compound its off to the pro shop for a bow press.   I have not heard a bad word from an Excaibur owner since I have been using Excal. in 1992.
