Well, the ground is starting to thaw, and the skunks are beginning to show up around here again.  The thing is, I HATE skunks, and I don't want them around.  Is there some way I can lure them out into an open spot so that I can humanely (and relatively odorlessly) get them with the .223?  I want to get rid of as many of them as possible before mating season begins, and the problem gets worse.  I thank you in advance for any help you can give, and so do my dogs. :lol:

Never heard of a way to call in polecats but, if there was a way I think I'd go down the road on my neighbors place east of here to do it.  They're starting to come out here already.  Got the first middle of last week across the field to the northeast.  22-250 with a Sierra 52gr. BTHP.  No smell.

To be honest , I think you need to trap them or when you see them , shoot them in the lungs with a .22 rifle . Its the sudden death thing that makes them spray . Whenever I trap then in my k9 and coon sets , I lung shoot them and rarely have a squirter .

that you use chicken bones for bait.   but i also have a prediction for you...they will take them at night and you wont see them.  or maybe you have a plan up your sleeve?    anyway,  for some reason they love chicken bones.   good luck.

Couple of ways to go about this.  As most trappers know, a meat based lure will bring in skunks.  The best recipe I have is sardines and peanut butter (works for coon too). Mix into a paste and place as bait. If its above freezing, set a cage trap and live catch them. Have a 20 foot rope already tied to the cage. Dig a pit, enough to drown them in. You can see where I'm going with this. Pull them into the pit (cage and all) when caught. Problem solved. Yotes, fox, etc will shy away from this set but skunks won't. This way you can let the neighbors cat Fluffy go without hurting him.  If you would rather put a bullet into them, use SHORTS. One in the chest cavity will do well. Shorts have far less percussion and will not trigger a spray like LR's will. My wife keeps her.22 with her in the garden, especially in the spring months when they become more active. Good luck :D

Have a lot of row crops around my place  lots of skunks 22 rifle mounted with 4power scope with a cabelas spot light mounted on top of scope can shine one up a long ways Leave a plate of cat food out  shine em up and zap em I think I paid around 60 bucks for my light .Have had lots of fun with it

My best friend used to live beside a dump in a rural township so we spent most of high school shooting skunks+ dump cats.
Chicken scraps or cat food work best and you can wear a skull beam like cavers do, or just duct tape a small mag light under the barrel of your shot gun.    AVOID HEADSHOTS, I found as Dan Mich Trapper did that body shots or breaking the spine with a load of #4 shot will keep them from squirting!
It should go without saying that this will go down at night.

Large fire crackers rolled down their holes work great to flush em out during the day!    :)

Grampa Bill used to bait them skunks at camp on the island in the St. Lawrence.  He placed a bag of scraps out about 20 yds. in front of the porch and wait till dark.  He would load up his trusty 12 gauge double and a 5 cell flashlight, seated across his knees as he waited in his rockin' chair.  Blam!  no more polecat.

I have found that most anything will get them in but the sardines work good also, if you lie trap them you can use a plastic tarp, hold it in front of you where the skunk cant see you the place over the cage you can then let them loose or kill them and they usually dont spray just dont let them see you.i live in texas and they are around here all year round we had a couple of weeks ago that sprayed my grannys dogs we had the head tested and it tested positive for rabies. so i am pretty dedicated to getting rid of them before something happens to my blue heeler as he will try to herd anything  :? .

      Oh whatever you do DONT ttry t spray the smell away with water or whatever they sprayed it makes the smell a lot worse Be careful have fun.
