need 44 cal mold help.
« on: March 06, 2005, 03:50:46 AM »
need a 44 cal mold that can be used for  3 44 mag revolvers, 2 445 revolvers and a T/C contender in 444 marlin and a marlin 444 rifle.  need a bullet that will work on buffalo, black bear, and wild boar.  Used a hornaday 265 fp on a buffalo out of the 445 and 444 marlin T/C and did not get  in to the vitals brock the shoulder but that was it.  would like an idea of best that would best work in all the above.

would also like a suggestion on a mold for 45-70 in a marlin guide gun and 22 in 1895.

 thanks  KC

A 300 gr LFN will work in all, and will go full lenght of most animals, if impact is directed so it can.  With so many guns, one nose length will  not be optimum for all, but a .450 nose will work in all.  At worst, if the nose is too long to feed smoothly in the rifle, you can seat deep as needed and lock the bullets with a light crimp, using the Lee factory crimp die.  A 320 gr is a better choice for the stouter guns, and will work well in any 44.  It also has room for a double crimp, which I will cut if requested to do so, to make it more universal.

For the 45-70 Marlin, I would prefer a 400 to 450 gr LFN, and don't drive it over 1600 fps, or the M bullet in 400 gr at 1800 + fps, for flatter trajectory.

For the 22, I better see a throat slug as that will determine what it will handle.
