Stock finish ?

What did Marlin use for a stock finish in the 50's? The 1952 RC I just picked up looks to have a varnish (spar varnish?)of some sort on it. The finish seems to "sweat"  where you hold it, it gets almost tacky under your hand while holding it.  The finish is in pretty good shape. The coverage is good with no real thin spots.  I'd like to keep it as is. Should I put a couple coats of wax over it for water protection, or consider adding a couple more coats of varnish or whatever is on it, then paste wax?

Why not contact Marlin customer service and ask if anyone can give you historical information on your gun's finish?
