Has anyone ever done any experimenting with castor taken from both young and older beaver? I have some castor from some 3-5 year old beaver I caught this year as well as some from yearlings and kits. Does anyone think the other beaver can tell the difference in age by the smell the castor gives off? And does anyone think it would matter to another beaver whether or not a beaver who was moving into his area was 5 years old or 1 year old? Seems to me that the older the beaver the greater the threat to a beavers home range. Its to late in the year for me to be able to experiment, but I have labeled the different castor and plan on comparing the two next season. Thanks, Worm.

Worm,I think they look at it , as intruder to their territory no matter the age.
 Making my lure,I have had castor from young of the year that is just as strong as those from the adults--to my nose which we know is nowhere near as good as a beavers,they all smell the same to me. Though my wife likes my nose much better than that of any beavers.
 Though I must say castors from differant areas,even in the north country do not all smell the same.

I concur.

I don't worry about how old the beav are when I make lure out of them, but I do watch where they come from. I like to keep the castors seperate from other areas unless I kill all of the beav off in an area. I really don't think I have to worry about this anymore though as I have a few different jars now, of castor from specific areas from a few years ago that were kept seperate for the reason that I made lure while I was trapping and wanted to make sure the beaver from colony A weren't baited with their own castor. I kept it seperate, Colony A and B, C , D, ........

Now, I really don't care, as I mix it together and I doubt the beaver could tell if some of it came from a colony mate when it is mixed with those of other colonies.
