1st gun for daughter contender or bolt?
« on: March 06, 2005, 04:18:18 PM »
I am really torn selecting a rifle for my young daughter.  I've decided I want a .223.  I'm left handed and she's right handed.  My son who is even younger is left handed.  I'd get her a small bolt action, but then if she loses interest I wouldn't have any use for a RH bolt action.

Is a contender carbine with a 16" barrel a good place for a small girl to start?  Would she be much better off with a remington model 7?  What's your experience?

I don't have any TCs yet.

I am in the same situation as you, except looking at two daughters.  I've already got a contender, so am looking for a 22lr carbine bbl, any length.  I'm not at all positive that my oldest can open the contender action by herself, and even the youth stock is a little too big right now, although I can almost watch her grow.  So I'm also looking at the mini-22's, such as the "chipmunk".  Seems that one of the little single shot bolts would fit the bill just fine, then she will have her very own rifle.

I've been wanting a 22lr barrel for my own use, anyway!

I would get the contender carbine. It is a great gun and works with both left and right handers.  :D

You have answered your own question... especially if you're like me and once you buy it you don't really want to part with it.

It's not like you're settling... T/C's are pretty nice and you can set them up all sorts of ways.

Guys:

Been there,  Three kids, Three grand kids,  Two left handed right eye dominate.  Tried the contender,  Very difficult to cock for little hands, especially in a tree stand.  One time the hammer slipped when letting it down and frighten Number one daughter pretty bad.  All of my kids and Grand kids like to hunt.  In cold weather it is really difficult for them to pull the hammer back on a Contender.  My solution was to buy Three Youth model Remington 700, 7-08's,  Three Remington youth model 700ML,  Three Remington youth model 1100's.  I scoped the 7-08's and 700ML's with Fixed 4X leupolds (Longest eye relief I could find).  I bought 3 extra Hasting slug barrels with cantilever mounts for the 1100 and scoped them with leupold fixed 4X's also.  Bought Turkey super full chokes to the 1100 barrels.  With these guns I took away "he's got a better gun than me" and my kids and grand kids can hunt anything in the continental US.
Yes, the whole thing cost me more than I want to admit, but it safely achieved my objective and the carry over skills from ML to bolt gun was easy.  Oh when the my kids grew up (they do you know) they bought what they wanted with their nickel, but they borrowed their old guns to teacher they wifes, husbands and kids.
The down side is I load a pot full of 7-08 with mininum powder charges and 20 ga light loads. Total cost of reloads has to have past the original cost of the fire arms.

I have three daughters. I started them out with a chipmunk 22lr. 2 are left dom and one right. they all get along great, a bit of a pain to open the bolt for the two left eyes. the oldest is now 10 and we are starting to look for a bigger gun. we are leaning toward going with encore. the action is easy to open, even the 6yr can do it, with a bit of help to keep the muzzle in a safe direction. most contender that i have seen are much more difficult to open.

i can't afford the buy one for all method, but they don't all have the same interest and desires.

Is a 16 in. barrel legal???? Go with the 24 in. barrel. I have a .17 AH on a Contender frame with a heavy barrel and it`s almost to lite to hold well even after I put on a very large home made for arm.  You might want to get a .22 Hornet instead of the .223 though. Not as loud and still a good 200 yrd. plus gun. Just my thoughts.

I would go with the Encore or G2.  They're easier to open than the older Contenders.  Yes, the 16 inch barrel is legal for rifle, but it's the minimum legal length.  Youth stocks are available for the T/C's, and it's easy enough to change stocks as your daughter gets older (or change over to handgun if she wants to handgun hunt).  You will also have the option to add a muzzle-loading barrel later if she wants to try that.  A lightweight hammer spur can be added for a little extra area to grip for small hands.

You should also consider an H&R of NEF. Less than 300.00 and can be used R or L!

I would second the suggestion to look at an NEF handirifle.  I got a contender (not G2) for my daughters and while cocking the hammer wasn't an issue opening the action was.  The handirifles come in a youth version and have interchangable barrels.
