I'm going to buy a revolver for deer hunting and am looking for advise on which gun. I've already decided on .41 mag as the caliber. I have it narrowed down to a S&W 657 or Ruger SBHH (ks-417nh). I'm going to shoot open sights. I already have an Encore with a scope for long distance work. So what are your opinions and suggestions? And before someone tells me to get a Freedom Arms, yes that is what I want. I just can't justify the price right now. I will have one someday though.

I would have to go with the Ruger SBHH. They are tough guns and the accuracy is great.

I prefer the S&W. Recently I got a used 99.9% 57 that is amazing. The N frame 41 is a great gun with wonderful action.

I also use a 657 pc hunter for my deer hunting.

Count my vote for S&W.

S&W. Everything about them is superb. The quality of Rugers is hit and miss, no pun intended.

all i will say is the super blackhawks aint as tough as everyone says they are. i had THREE guns i bought break in the exact same manner with mid level loads being fired. i couldnt justify the price of a f.a. back then either, until i had three broke guns $350+$335+$625=$1310 in broken guns. i then found a f.a. 83 in 44 magnum for $900. two sbh's are gone. one remains (for now). after that experience, it was REALLY easy for me to justify the f.a..

now get ready for folks to tell you how great rugers are, and how it is somehow something i did, they may tell you how great rugers service is, they might even say that it just isnt mathimatically possible, or that is wont happen to you.

whatever.

all i can say for sure is i will never buy another blackhawk- or advise anyone else to do so. although ruger did fix the guns, one came back scratched up bigger than kong. that is the one i still have. and i might add, they took their sweet time fixing them; and never tried to explain to me what he real problem was. matter of fact, they were not all that interested in talking with me at all. it took many phone calls and still never really got a solid answer. i finally figured it wasnt worth the aggravation. but, i am telling everyone i can.

i have the super black hawk hunter
an ill say i love the thing i like it over my other black hawk i have it in the regular bule 7 1/2 in 44 mag, the 41 hunter is nice handles good the only thing i have found is i dont like having a 4x leupold on it im going to go down to a 1-4 buris or nikon if i can find one that is in nice shape having 4 power is very nice but over powers the gun for hunting were i go
i like that you can change the front sight on it but i havent looked in to geting replacements for it as of yet, all so ruger will trade in your rings for a different height if neaded

but i must all so say i never shot a smith in a revolver so i cant say it is better than a sw but i am limited in $$ thats why i tock the ruger an im glad i did so far

I have a regular 41 bH scoped and like it more so than my Hunter. Seems to have a bit better balance with the scope over the cylinder rather than the bbl. Unscoped, A SA just still has better balance for me, besides you're quite unlikely going to use the DA mode while hunting anyways.

My ruger had a 4 power scope on it when I tried it out, I didn't care for the 4 power either, and told the fella that owned the rig that if it had a 2 power on it that I would buy it....he put a two on it and it's been mine ever since.

I've got the .41 in S&W, Ruger and TC, all are toped with a Lepould 4x scope. All of them shoot great and have been good guns, but if I could only have one it would be the Smith. The only thing I dislike about it is its blue. They didn't make the stainless when I bought, but thats the way I would go today if buying.

Thanks for the opinions. Seems like it is pretty much a tie and comes down to personal preference, which is what I kinda figured would happen.
So, I guess I'm just going to have to pick one and hope it was the right choice for me.
What is the consensus on the new Smiths with the transfer bar and hammer lock. Any problems, is the trigger as good as the old ones? The only Smiths I have ever shot where the older style with the pin on the hammer.
