I am thinking about getting an Encore with a 454 barrel from SSK.

will I need to go with a 6 hole mount or will the normal T/C mount work?

I am thinking about getting the barrel in 12 inch but also thinking the 14 will work, I will be mostly shooting paper and some very light deer hunting. If I take it deer hunting i will be hunting from a stand. what do you people think?

I know a lot of people do not like ported barrels that a side would the 454 need to be ported to keep muzzle flip down how will it compare to my 375 jdj?
tell me everything you people know about the 454 from an encore

I shoot a 10" Fox Ridge ported stainless bull barrel. I ported it KNOWING I will propably re-bore it to the new 460 S&W. It has very little muzzle flip with the ports and comes straight back. I did make a mistake on the rings, using the standard Weaver rings. I use the standard 4 hole Weaver mount and ordered 2 sets of Burris Signature Zee rings...I'll mount the scope (Bushnell Trophy 2-6) with 3 Burris rings. This thing is pure hell on scope rings,,,the 4 hole mount is fine,,,just use a 3 ring setup!!

anytime I can I use a weaver scope mount and 3 weaver rings. This worked well with my 209x50 contender.
I always line the rings with rubber cement to keep the scope from slipping.
I love the look of the 3 ring set up

I have a 454, 44, and 480 in 10" that I bought during special 10" barrel runs from TC. I also have a 12" 454 that I picked up in a trade. I haven't shot them in a while since I am getting rid of my hard kicking pistols.

I would say that the 10" and 12" barrels are just right for the 454 since the gun feels well balanced versus the longer barrels that require more support and a little muzzle heavy. I don't think you would lose much in speed, and definitely accuracy with a 10" or 12" barrel. Since you are going custom, you could always get a 16" to use as a pistol and carbine if you want something a little longer.

The 454 and 480 have sported Redfield 3-Ring base and mounts on them, that I aligned and lapped for good hold. Leupold 4X scopes are on both. They have never failed me. I have also had good luck with the Burris rings with the inserts on my hard kicking rifles and also good luck on my varmint rifles with Leupold QR rings so I can switch from a target scope to a hunting scope. I don't think a 6 hole mount would be a bad thing, since the 454 does have some flip to it once you get some pretty warm loads going.

I have two - a Fox Ridge 15" heavy taper w/the 4 port mag-na-port and a 10" SSK full bull. Both have the 6-hole SSK T'SOB mount. Get the T'SOB no matter what configuration you order. Both of mine wear the Leupold 2x EER. JD recommended the full bull configuration with the 10" length without any porting or brake. He was right - my 10" recoils much less than the 15" with the porting. Yeah, a full bull is heavy but not bad at all in the 10" length. For a revolver cartridge, get the 10". I was planning on selling my fox ridge rig but it is going to see new life as a 460 S&W later this summer, courtesy of SSK. Shoot the full power loads and have fun!!!
