6.5 Rem Mag

YES, I have one in the Encore Custom Shop barrel and love it. I bought it for long range shooting and hunting. I'm working on 120grn and 140grn loads right now. It is running about 3100fps with IMR4195 and the 120grn bullet and that is in the same category as the 6.5-284 if not faster and just a little above the Rem 260. I was looking at the 6.5-284 and just wanted something different. I will take it Elk hunting along with my .375JDJ if I go this year.
It was introduced in 1966 in the Remington 600 rifle. Remington later chambered the 700 in it. It is not real popular now but I have talked to some rilfe builders and they say it is coming back in a Remington rifle they hear.
Brass is a little hard to find but it is out there. Ordered a good set of dies and I'm in business. I have a Burris 3x9 pistol scope with target turrets and Burris scope ring inserts and I'm working on loads to shoot at a long range seminar out to 1000yds if I get it all together. It has already put up some good numbers and groups out to 300 yds and now I have to find another range that is longer.
Check out this link site below. It tells the history, loads and some more info for it.

8) I had one of the original Remington 600 rifles in 6.5 Mag. with the 18 1/2" barrel.  Along with the .350 Remington Mag., these were the original Short Mags and IMHO were far ahead of their time.  My old load notes show the best accuracy was with 129 gr.  Hornady bullets and IMR 4320 powder.  There were not too many suitable bullets at that time (late sixties), as the only other 6.5 bores were the 6.5 x 55, 6.5 x 54 and the .264 Winchester Mag..  In a moment of youthful ignorance, I foolishly traded it for a Remington 760 in 30/06.  I do remember that it was really LOUD, and the blast wave would move the grass on the range for a good distance.  Glad to hear that it is making a well deserved comebavk.  Regards.
