BC range report

After a week or two of waiting, I took the new BC to the range today. It was a short session because it was only 12 degrees. All I had ready to shoot was a box of factory WW 300 grain factory loads.

The rear sight was set as high as it would go. I took one shot at a small patch of snow about 225 yards away. It hit about two foot high. After a shot or two at 25 yards and moving the sight all the way down, it still hit about three inches high. This made it hit about eight inches high at 100 yards. I have not tried any of the other inserts for the front globe sight to see if any of them would be taller. I had a small round insert in it for today.

I won't be shooting bullets that light so with the temp what it was I gave up for the day. I shot one group at 100 yards. It was about two inches but I didn't have a target that I could see well through the small hole in the globe. All in all I think it will zero in well and shoot well.

I stopped at Cabelas the other day and picked up a slip on recoil pad called the Shooters Friend or something like that. It fits well over the curved butt plate and is about three inches wide on the outside at the rear. Its very soft and really took the whack out of the recoil. I would highly recommend it. It looks a bit silly but NO PAIN. It slips off and on very easy.

Now for long range sights. I have a notion to try a tang sight bedded into the stock. I Emailed Lee Shaver about having him install one as he has for others. I never heard back from him yet. Does he attach it to the reciever as well as the stock? Have a good day ALL. :grin:

I talked to Lee Shaver a couple times about their Soule before deciding on the Smith Enterprises ladder.  He has two methods of mounting it.  First is just aligning it on the stock and screwing it down with wood screws.  The other method (more expensive) is to inlet the stock in the shape of the sight, and install a "False Tang" for it to screw to with normal machine screws.  They do NOT attach this false tang to the frame.  It is glued into the bottom of the inletted stock and the screws are threaded into it.  In the end, I decided that the expense was too much for a sight that in the first method was simply screwed to the stock and in the second method essentially glued via the false tang.

I might go with the Smith sight as well. Where did you order yours? I may try mounting the tang sight on the stock. If I do I am going to order a regular wood stock or use one off another of my rifles. I don't want to screw up the walnut stock because its a darn pretty one. That would also give me a stock with a standard butt and recoil pad.

BC= Buffalo Classic as in H&R 1871 Buffalo Classic.
