I believe it is a J.D. Jones creation. You might check with him at www.sskindustries.com

Thanks for the reply. You are correct, it being a J.D. Jones round but I don't see it listed on his site.

The 338 Woodswalker was introduced in 1989.  It was designed to pack power in a cartridge that operated well from a 10" barrel.  It uses the 8.15X46R case and can generate 2000 fps with a 200 grain bullet from a 10" barrel - not quite in hand cannon territory but close.

I have an SSK barrel that I've hunted with off and on for 15 years.  I use Hornady 200FP (designed for the .33 Winchester) and older 200BT.  It's a compact package with excellent performance out to 200 yards and capable of excellent accuracy.

I've also formed cases from 30-30 brass as the supply of 8.15X46 was scarce and, when it is available, it is expensive.

I believe SSK just sold off the remaining 338 WW barrels.

Thanks for the reply. I am one of those fotunate to  get one of the last bbl's from J.D. It is a 12" chrome w/out brake. Hornady has quit making the 200 gr. F.P., but still have some in stock. 300 boxes+/-. Ordered 5 boxes and  working on some loads now. My first experience at fire-forming. Mounted 2x Leopold in T'Sob mount. Very good quality. J.D.'s folks were most helpfull with guiding me thru the initial loads.
                                                        Thanks again, pmconner

12" should make a nice, handy gun.  I bought five boxes of Hornady 200FP's last year.  Should last me a while since I don't shoot nearly as much as I used to.  I still have two boxes of the old Nosler 200 BT's.  They are a little thinner skinned than the new ones and open up well at WW velocities.

I'll bet you'll be happy with your gun.  It's a great deer, bear, hog caliber.  I still have the original loads that were published in The Handgunner if you need any help.

Sorry for the late reply, haven't been checking forum lately, summer time mowing etc. Would be very much interested in getting load data you mentioned. How is the best way to go about it? Thanks again for your input.

pmconner,
Where did you order your bullets from?

Phil Magistro,
I understand the newer 200BT's are a bit tough for the WW, any idea how the 200gr Accubonds would work? I hear they may be a little thinner than the BT's.........ever shoot any cast bullets in yours?

I ordered the 200 gr. flat pts. directly from Hornady. Real nice folks and they take credit cards for your order.
