Has Taurus gotten it's QC act together?
« on: March 09, 2005, 01:53:58 AM »
Greetings!
  :D
I'm new to this site and was wondering if Taurus has finally gotten it's act together as far as QC is concerned. I have read many old posts and some new ones - many say that the new firearms have become much better than the older models. Please let me know. I'm especially interested in the Model 905 9mm revolver. Anyone having any experience with them, please let me know. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

I'm not prepared to bet my money on it. I think it's been over a year now since my last one but as bad as the last four I have had were I'm not likely to put my money into another any time soon. IF you buy be sure to look it over and check it out well BEFORE you plunk down your money. As bad as my last experiences with their customer service was I'd just trade it back to the dealer where I got it if it wasn't right. Don't wanna go thru that again.

When I am looking to buy a new hand gun, I don't even consider taurus.

A friend of mine has two Taurus PT-92 semi-autos, one about ten years old, the other he got about two months ago.  He's had no problems, and really likes them.
Don't know about their revolvers.  I was tempted to try their DA revolver in .22LR, but found a very nice Smith 17-3 instead.

Graybeard,

What happened to your raging bull? Last I heard you were happy with it, but that's been awhile back.

Love the RBs. Great guns. I've not seen a bad one. However most every thing else does seem to be bad. I sold my RB454 as I just didn't see the need for it and the RB480 both and I like the .480 far better than the .454. I shoot the 400-430 grain bullets in my RB480 and much prefer that to the lighter .454 bullets.

The guns I was refering to as junk were the M44s and the two M460s.

time to bash Taurus

After 4 losers I just have to vent about the shoddy Taurus products.
First was a new .357 (Mod 66 I think) brand new with timing problems. It kept binding up before I ever fired a shot. Took it back the next day.
Then there was the Millenium 40cal. Great size and wt for carry but the worst trigger I ever felt. Sold it
Then a .45LC Titanium the kept locking up and couldnt' hit the ground from a prone position. Sold it.
Now it's a 2" titanium 357 that I really like but the ejector rod keeps coming out and binding the cylinder. It shoots everything about 2 or 3 inches to the right and the titanium can't take the flash and heat . The front of the cylinder has actully melted. Deep grooves cut into the metal by flash from the magnum loads. By the way taurus really doesn't care or respond when you try to communicate with them.
Customer service stinks.
If someone could tell me how to post pictures I could show some amazing digital shots of melted titanium.
I don't see myslelf ever buying Taurus again.

I think on all their revolver models EXCEPT the Raging Bull's the QC is still hit or miss.
For me personally I will only buy one after I go over it very carefully. I don't care for rugers at all, I don't buy into the whole investment casting process.
Magnum Research only gives you a 1 year parts and labor warranty.. :?
Freedom arms are WAY overpriced, just cant justify that price tag.
S&W is still tied to the "agreement" so I wont buy a new smith,so for me it comes down to a taurus or a used S&W.... :D

Thank you all for your replies! The only reason I asked about Taurus, is that I'd really like to get a 9mm snubby revolver. They seem to have the only one around.  :? Have seen some used 9mms but the price is way out of line $800-$1000 - sorry don't even remember where I saw them now. Anyway, thanks again. Your help is greatly appreciated.

If a 9mm is what you want take a look at the Kel-Tec P11. Good workmanship for the price.

Thanks for the suggestion Graybeard, Kel-Tec P11 looks nice and reasonable price - but not a revolver. When I'm in the market for a semi-auto, I'll certainly consider the p11. All input is appreciated!

I thought the S&W-Clinton "agreement" was history.  Am I wrong?  Also, the company has changed hands and is now American owned, so unless I'm wrong on the first point, I see no reason to avoid S&W products.

Washita, Yes you are wrong. The agreement is still in effect. While the new owners may not fully abide by it, they have made no attemp to have it dismissed by our gun friendly administration that is into a second term in the White House. Just wait until someone like Kerry or ,god forbid, Billary get's in and see what happens..... :D

The sorry truth is that just about all the makes are hit or miss on QC.

I have two Rugers with chamber alignment issues, another out of the box with end shake.

I have two Colts, an Anaconda with a misfitted cylinder latch, repair center did a butcher's job of trying to fix it.  A Mustang out of the box with the rear sight falling off.

An Interarms Whitworth Mauser action rifle that sheds bits and pieces under recoil.

An Uggie shot gun that locked up due a loose metal chip in the works.

A Taurus out of the box with a chamber alignment issue.

Several S&W's out of the box with end shake and cylinder gap issues.  One with a chamber alignment question

A Pietta cap & ball revolver with a horrible trigger pull.  (Not but what you wouldn't expect that at the price.)

Now what's the warantee worth if it costs you $45 to ship it back via Fed Ex?  They did a butcher's fix on my Anaconda and I've heard similar stories about the warantee work for S&W and Taurus.  I've seen one S&W sent back and returned unrepaired myself.  Ruger is reputed to do a decent repair job.  Including "repairing" your expensive trigger job.

Look for a used Ruger Sp-101 in 9mm or a used S&W 940.  The ruger can be had for well less than $400 the S&W a $100  more. I have the Ruger and can't say enough about it.  I've had bad (!) experiences with older Taurus, I can't say anything about the new ones .

I have gone through a 5 of their revolvers, including Ti.  I personally don’t think that the Ti technology is quite ready yet.  I now seem to have 2 fairly good ones, both stainless in the Tracker series, a .41 mag and a .45LC.  I probably got both of them within the last 12 – 18 months.

I kept trying because I wanted a mid frame .41 for a packing in the woods piece.  Nobody else made one.  I finally got a good one, then tried the .45LC. The .41 actually put 10 rounds into a 7/8” group at 25 yds off a ransom rest with factory ammo (Speer Gold Dot).
So, my .02 is that some of the revolvers can be pretty good and provide features nobody else is offering yet.  I think that their revolver QC is better than it was (sorry GB, but my 2 Trackers work fine  ).
I have one weapon and lots of toys.
If life turns really ugly, the one closest to hand is a weapon.
All the rest are toys.

Yeah but it took you five to get two good ones. Most folks just don't want them that badly. I sure don't.

I held a Tracker 17 in my hand that had the workmanship of a plastic cap pistol. Matel produced better in my opinion. I would vote for the SP-101 in 9mm too. I own one in 32 Mag and I love, love, love it. I believe the 9mm case headspaces on the mouth too but I could be wrong. Anyway, check out a Ruger if you can find one. Maybe in the Gun List you'll find one.
